A short circuit originating in a utility room sparked a fire tonight in a residence located at 200 Gonzalo de Quesada Street, in the city of Las Tunas, Cuba, around eight o'clock in the evening.

The Command 105 of the Fire Department extinguished the flames before the fire could spread, reported on Facebook by the sports commentator from the telecenter TunasVisión, Orlando Cruz Vázquez. There were no reported material losses or human casualties.

The photographs published alongside the report show truck number 600 from Command 105, an old-model red vehicle with its emergency lights on, parked in front of the house. Other images depict two firefighters in dark uniforms with yellow reflective stripes working inside the building.

The term "cuarto de desahogo" refers in Cuba to an improvised storage space within homes, commonly found in a housing context where space is limited and the stored materials may be flammable.

The incident occurs within the context of a prolonged electricity crisis that has greatly increased the risk of short circuits and household fires across the island. Frequent power outages and the sudden restoration of electricity create overloads in deteriorated electrical installations, which has led to multiple documented incidents in 2025 and 2026.

The Comando 105 has intervened in several recent fires in the province. In May 2025, a short circuit in an air conditioning unit triggered a fire at the "14 de junio" polyclinic in Jobabo, which was extinguished by the center's own staff without the need to evacuate patients.

That same month, the combustion of an electric tricycle caused a fire in a home on Nicolás Heredia Street, in Las Tunas, which left two people hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

In October 2025, a scooter exploded in a house in Jobabo, causing material losses but no injuries.

The electrical crisis has also impacted other provinces: in April 2026, a devastating fire destroyed at least three homes in Guantánamo during a total blackout, and in December 2025 a fire swept through a residence in Guanabacoa, Havana, after 12 hours without electricity.
