A Cuban citizen identified as Óscar Díaz Concepción, 34 years old and originally from Havana, was found dead in a residence in Bávaro-Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, last Sunday night, around 11:50 p.m.
The incident was reported by the local media Bávaro Digital, which published the news along with an image showing an ambulance from the Dominican National Health System parked at the scene.
Según el medio, la identidad del fallecido fue establecida a partir de los documentos de identidad obtenidos por sus periodistas en el lugar del hecho.
"The initial reports indicate that the death may be linked to a possible suicide by hanging, although the case is still under investigation," specified Bávaro Digital.
Dominican authorities have not yet released an official statement regarding the circumstances of the death, and the case remains open.
It is not the first time that a Cuban has lost their life under tragic circumstances in Dominican territory. In July 2025, Sudny Cabrera Ricardo, a 40-year-old Cuban, died after falling from a fourth floor in Santiago de los Caballeros, in a case that is also under investigation by the National Police and the Dominican Public Ministry.
Both cases reflect the vulnerability faced by many emigrated Cubans in a context of massive exodus from the island that has made the Dominican Republic one of the main destinations for Cuban emigration.
In 2025, more than 100,000 Cubans traveled to the Dominican Republic, with peaks during the summer months, and since 2018 the country has granted legal residency to over 14,664 Cubans.
The Bávaro-Punta Cana area, in the province of La Altagracia, is home to a stable Cuban community made up of residents and workers in the hotel and service sector. It also serves as a meeting point for the diaspora, especially for those traveling from South Florida to visit relatives who cannot enter the United States.
The case of Óscar Díaz Concepción adds to a series of tragedies affecting Cubans abroad, amid an ongoing exodus that leaves thousands in conditions of high vulnerability outside their country.
