The Miami International Airport (MIA) achieved a record economic impact of $212 billion in business revenue for the state of Florida in 2025, according to a new study by Martin Associates, released on Tuesday.
The figure represents a 17% increase compared to the previous year, equivalent to an additional 31 billion dollars, driven by the simultaneous growth of passenger traffic and cargo volume, according to the agency EFE.
The employment directly and indirectly associated with airport activities grew by 12%, reaching 945,682 jobs statewide, more than 100,000 additional jobs compared to the previous year.
The mayor of Miami-Dade County, Daniella Levine Cava, emphasized the significance of the achievement: “Congratulations to the entire MIA community for another record year that brought substantial benefits to our local economy, increasing business revenue by $31 billion and creating over 100,000 additional jobs statewide compared to the previous year.”
In terms of cargo, shipments surged by 13.6% to nearly 3.5 million tons in 2025, solidifying MIA as the busiest cargo airport in the United States and the third largest in the world, surpassed only by Hong Kong and Shanghai.
Passenger traffic also reached a historic figure of 55.3 million travelers, allowing the airport to rise two positions to become the eighth busiest in the country.
MIA also remains the second busiest airport in the United States for international travelers, surpassing 55 million passengers for the second consecutive year.
The airport channels approximately 60% of all international visitors arriving annually in Florida and offers more flights to Latin America and the Caribbean than any other U.S. airport, making it a strategic hub for the region.
The three major credit agencies also endorsed MIA's financial strength in their May assessments: Fitch Ratings assigned an A+ rating with a positive outlook, KBRA gave an AA- rating with a positive outlook, and S&P maintained an A+ rating with a stable outlook, also highlighting the airport's essential role within American Airlines' network.
The airport set a historical record for passengers in January 2025, when it recorded 201,180 travelers in a single day on January 6th, confirming a trajectory of sustained growth that now translates into unprecedented economic figures for Florida.
Furthermore, last April, MIA and PortMiami announced new expansion and modernization projects, including an airport program valued at 14 billion dollars that encompasses over 200 infrastructure works.
