A Cuban citizen was arrested on Wednesday morning after allegedly stealing a cell phone from a pharmacy on Yaxchilán Avenue, one of the busiest commercial areas in Cancún, and being tracked by the victim using the device's geolocation feature, according to local media in Quintana Roo reported.

According to preliminary information, the suspect entered the establishment pretending to be a customer and took advantage of a moment when the employees were distracted to seize the cell phone, leaving the premises without raising any suspicions.

After the robbery, he boarded a public transport unit from the company Playa Express heading to Playa del Carmen.

Upon realizing the theft, the device owner activated the GPS geolocation feature and began tracking its location in real time.

The signal indicated that the phone was moving south, toward Playa del Carmen, which led the victim to trace the signal to the municipality of Puerto Morelos, located about 38 kilometers south of Cancun.

There, the victim spotted the suspect aboard a Playa Express unit that was temporarily stopped, as confirmed by the site SIPSE.

The victim asked the driver to stop the vehicle and confronted the suspect directly.

"With the help of several passengers, the suspect was subdued while the victim requested the authorities," reported De Peso Q. Roo.

Minutes later, elements of the Preventive Police of Puerto Morelos arrived at the scene and proceeded with the formal arrest of the individual.

The individual was transported by patrol to the facilities of the Attorney General's Office of the State of Quintana Roo, where they were made available to the authorities for the necessary proceedings.

The victim was urged to file a formal complaint with the Public Prosecutor's office of the common jurisdiction to continue the legal process.

This incident is part of a series of arrests of Cuban citizens in Cancun in recent days. Last Monday, the police arrested two Cubans with a motorcycle that had its serial number altered, and that same Wednesday two other Cubans were arrested for their alleged involvement in a viral fight.

Weeks earlier, on May 26, a Cuban identified as Yoanki "N", 36 years old, was arrested for alleged theft in a notary's office in the city, with a backpack, a metal bar, and cash confiscated.

In April, neighbors from Supermanzana 23 protested in front of the Benito Juárez town hall reporting at least ten monthly incidents of assaults and thefts in various supermanzanas of the municipality.

The Attorney General's Office will be responsible for determining the legal status of the detainee as the proceedings progress and evidence is gathered for the case.
