"Nobody knew he was coming! He appeared unexpectedly after 7 years and surprised his entire family: 'We told them a little box was arriving.'"

A Cuban woman surprised her family in Cuba with the return of her cousin after 7 years of separation, in a viral video that reflects the Cuban migration drama.

A Cuban identified on TikTok as @ailetsantos posted a video capturing the moment her cousin arrives in Cuba as a surprise after seven years without seeing her family, in a reunion that moved thousands of users on social media.

In the video, the author quietly narrates that her family has no idea what is about to happen: "I am already in Cuba. What they don't know is that in that car is not just my sister's husband, my brother-in-law from the United States, but my cousin is also coming. I haven't seen her in seven years, and they haven't seen her in a very long time either."

To keep the secret, the family was prepared with a small, loving lie: they were told that Aunt was sending "a little box with a small surprise."

The moment of the hug, captured in one minute and 14 seconds, unleashed a wave of emotional reactions in the comments, featuring crying emojis, hearts, and prayers from dozens of users who identified with the scene.

In the video's description, @ailetsantos wrote: "Reunion after 7 years. Almost the entire family together again, although there are some very important people missing."

This type of content has consolidated as a viral trend on TikTok during 2025 and 2026, driven by the largest migratory exodus in Cuba's history. Between 2020 and 2024, more than 1.4 million Cubans left the island, leaving behind parents, children, siblings, and cousins separated for years.

The high cost of tickets —which can exceed 1,000 dollars— extends those separations and makes every return a heavily emotional event that social media amplifies massively.

Similar cases have been documented in recent months: a Cuban woman returned to the island after 20 years to hug her mother, and another had an emotional reunion in the midst of a blackout upon arriving at her home in Cuba.

Other viral videos have shown reunions after six years without seeing their children, separations of three years resolved with a surprise visit, and a Cuban who returned to the island after 12 years in front of her family's incredulous gaze.

The distinguishing element of @ailetsantos's video is the double surprise: the family was only expecting the brother-in-law arriving from the United States, but the cousin—who had been absent for seven years—unexpectedly appeared, amplifying the emotional weight of the moment.

Between 2021 and mid-2024, more than 860,000 Cubans left the island in what is considered the largest exodus in the country's history, a direct consequence of the economic and political crisis generated by decades of communist dictatorship that has fragmented thousands of Cuban families across the globe.
