The documentary «Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara: We Are Connected» will be screened this Tuesday, June 9, at 6:30 PM at the Freedom Tower in Miami, located at 600 Biscayne Boulevard, with free admission and parking.

The event was personally announced by the Cuban filmmaker Ernesto Fundora, director of the documentary, in a video for CiberCuba and also posted on Facebook.

«We are at the Tower of Freedom in Miami. On that screen you see there, for about 150 or 200 people, in this wonderful room, we will be showing the documentary Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara: We Are Connected. I hope all our friends in Miami who haven't been able to see this piece will join us. It will be an unforgettable night,» said Fundora.

The filmmaker emphasized the unique nature of this event, which takes place in the weeks leading up to the protagonist's release in Cuba.

"This is likely to be the last screening we have of this documentary before Luis Manuel's release, which we hope will occur in accordance with the law, between July 9 and 15," Fundora stated.

The Cuban Supreme Court confirmed in April that Otero Alcántara's sentence expires on July 9, 2026, after rejecting a habeas corpus petition filed by Cubalex that sought his immediate release.

Fundora described the audiovisual as "a biographical documentary about this opposition leader, political activist, and a great performer, sculptor, and ephemeral artist."

The production, lasting 98 minutes, was filmed in Cuba between 2016 and 2021 and completed in Mexico City in November 2025. It includes interviews with Yanelys Núñez, Amaury Pacheco, and Iris Ruiz, collaborators of the Movimiento San Isidro, featuring music by Omar Sosa and Armando Gola.

The documentary was released online on May 20 on the YouTube channel of CiberCuba, expanding its international reach following its world premiere on February 7, 2026, at the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora in Miami.

Otero Alcántara, co-founder of the San Isidro Movement, was arrested on July 11, 2021, during the protests of 11J and sentenced in June 2022 to five years in prison for "insulting national symbols, contempt, and public disorder."

He is serving a sentence in the maximum-security prison of Guanajay, in Artemisa, and Amnesty International recognizes him as a prisoner of conscience.

The journey of the documentary has not been without obstacles. On May 21, militants from the Mexican Communist Party physically attacked Fundora during a screening at the Cultural University Center of Coyoacán, hurling insults such as "Damn worms!" at the audience.

The Freedom Tower in Miami is a National Historic Landmark built in 1925. The building currently serves as the cultural hub for Miami Dade College. It is a symbol of the Cuban exile, which gives special significance to the event on June 9th.
