Agents of the Del Rio Sector Border Patrol arrested Lázaro Alberto Betancourt-Osorio, a 44-year-old Cuban with previous convictions for sexual offenses against minors, on June 1, while he was hiding in the brush alongside six other individuals in a remote area near El Indio, Texas, about 20 kilometers south of Eagle Pass.
According to the official statement from the Customs and Border Protection Office, the background check revealed that Betancourt-Osorio was convicted in 2012 in Florida for using a computer to seduce, solicit, and lure a minor, and for traveling to meet that minor after having enticed them online.
For those offenses, he was sentenced to 42 months in prison and, after serving his sentence, was deported from the United States in 2016.
Despite that deportation, Betancourt-Osorio illegally returned to the country and in 2025 was found again in U.S. territory without authorization, which led to a second deportation.
However, he re-entered illegally and was captured for the third time on June 1 by agents from the Carrizo Springs Station during a patrol in a remote area.
The detainee was presented before a federal court of magistrates in the Western District of Texas and faces charges under Title 8, Section 1326 of the Federal Code, pertaining to the illegal reentry of a deported alien. The maximum penalty he could face is up to 20 years in prison, in addition to fines.
The Chief Agent of the Del Rio Sector, Anthony «Scott» Good, spoke out about the case.
"This arrest by the agents at the Carrizo Springs Station highlights the importance of constant surveillance along the immediate border. With previous convictions for sex crimes against minors, this illegal immigrant posed a serious threat to our communities. He and others like him must understand one thing: if they are in this country illegally, they will be caught."
The arrest occurs in the context of the strict border security measures of the Trump administration, which have drastically reduced illegal crossings at the southwestern border.
In response to this reduction, human traffickers have adapted their methods and force migrants through remote and dangerous terrain to evade the Border Patrol, which is particularly hazardous during the high summer temperatures.
This case adds to a series of arrests of Cubans with serious criminal records carried out by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol during 2026.
On June 3, ICE arrested three Cubans in Florida with prior offenses for child abuse, drug trafficking, and grand theft, and in March, they arrested Álvaro Tuero, a Cuban convicted of sexual assault against a 13-year-old in Newark.
In May, ICE also reported the arrest of three Cubans convicted of serious crimes against minors in various states across the country, as part of the Trump administration's operations against undocumented immigrants with criminal records.
