Fernando Febles, a resident of Varadero born on April 21, 1990, lost his life this Tuesday in a traffic accident that occurred on the Vía Rápida, near Guásima, in the province of Matanzas, as reported by the community group Cardenenses on Facebook.
The incident was reported initially as "ongoing," with confirmation that a person traveling on a green motorcycle had died at the scene. As hours passed, the identity of the victim and the circumstances of the accident were revealed.
According to the information received by the group, the accident occurred when the motorcycle carrying Febles collided with a vehicle merging onto the road after leaving the Posta 1 area of Cupet.
Some people pointed out that the car entered from a point where there was no left turn, although it will be up to the authorities to accurately determine the circumstances and potential responsibilities.
Fernando was a well-known figure in the Varadero community: many remembered him for his work as a motorcycle painter and for his passion for that world, while others knew him as a taxi driver in the tourist area.
The loss hits particularly hard for his immediate family. Febles leaves behind two small children and a wife who, according to close acquaintances, was with the children in Spain at the time of the accident.
A user identified the immediate family members in a comment: "What sad news. A wonderful father and husband. My condolences to Liseth, María Fernanda, and their baby."
The news generated a flood of condolence messages on social media from friends, university classmates, and neighbors who described him as an exceptional person.
The accident occurs in a context of high traffic accident rates in Cuba. In 2025, the country recorded 7,538 traffic accidents with 750 fatalities and 6,718 injuries, according to official figures from the National Road Safety Commission.
Motorcycles and mopeds were involved in 63% of the accidents recorded that year, largely due to the proliferation of these vehicles as an alternative in response to fuel shortages and the deterioration of public transport.
Matanzas has been a recurring scene for this type of tragedy. A motorcyclist died in Cárdenas in July 2025 and another lost his life in Colón just days earlier, in June of that same year, in a series of accidents that highlights the serious road safety issue faced by the province.
The main causes identified by Cuban authorities are the disregard for right-of-way, lack of attention while driving, and speeding, factors that account for 72% of the accidents recorded in 2025.
“Behind every accident, there is a story, a family, and dreams that are abruptly interrupted,” wrote Christian Arbolaez, administrator of the Cardenenses group, when delivering the painful news of Fernando Febles' death.
