A musician from Havana known as Yainer proposed to his Spanish girlfriend, content creator Melanie Vidal (@meloviajo), just three months after they met, in what she described as "the biggest surprise" of her second trip to Cuba.
The moment was captured in a video published this Thursday on TikTok, where Melanie narrates how the proposal unfolded: the couple woke up at 5:30 in the morning to embark on a trek to Los Acuáticos, a small village nestled in the heights of Viñales, in Pinar del Río.
"This small village, where only three families remain, offers one of the best views to see the sunrise in Viñales," Melanie explained in the video.
It was there, watching the sunrise over the Viñales Valley and with an "unexpected witness," that Yainer made the proposal. "While we were admiring that incredible spectacle and with an unexpected witness, the magic happened," the Spanish woman recounted.
Melanie, originally from Barcelona, has been documenting her long-distance love story with the Cuban musician since 2023 and has over 150,000 followers on TikTok and 120,000 on Instagram.
The story of this couple had already captured the attention of social media months earlier. In April 2026, the reunion of Melanie and Yainer at the Havana airport—after three months apart and following a 17-hour journey from Spain—gained over 110,600 views in less than 24 hours.
Weeks later, in May 2026, the relationship sparked controversy when Melanie had to publicly respond to criticism questioning the authenticity of her bond with Yainer, within the historical stigma surrounding relationships between foreign women and Cubans, a phenomenon associated since the 1990s with sex tourism.
The marriage proposal in Los Acuáticos marks a new chapter in this story, which Melanie had already hinted to her audience with the phrase, "I know you were all waiting for this."
The Viñales Valley, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Cuba, and the trek to Los Acuáticos is among the most sought-after excursions in the area, with departures at dawn and an approximate duration of three to three and a half hours.
It is not the first time that a marriage proposal involving a Cuban has gone viral: other similar proposals have sparked discussions on social media about love, distance, and the prejudices faced by these couples.
