A young woman lost her life early Sunday morning on the Malecón in Havana after the car she was driving crashed into a streetlight pole at the intersection with Third Street in Vedado and completely caught fire. The area was experiencing a blackout at the time of the incident.

The incident was reported on social media by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada and by a Facebook user identified as Yuriel Fernández, who published videos showing the vehicle engulfed in flames in the middle of the street, surrounded by people trying to do something.

Eyewitnesses described heart-wrenching scenes. The user identified as Yasmany Alfonso, who stated he was at the scene from the moment of the impact, recounted: “I saw the car from the moment it crashed. The one driving was a young white girl with short hair.”

"Those of us who were there broke the glass of the back door to get her out, and when we opened the car, she was alive but unconscious. The fire intensified, and despite our efforts, we couldn't get her out," Alfonso added.

Additionally, he stated that a man tried to enter the flaming vehicle to rescue the victim, but could not withstand the heat. "What a pain it gave me to see that we could have saved her and we couldn't," he wrote.

The civilians present stopped a traffic patrol in search of a fire extinguisher and threw water on the car in an attempt to extinguish the flames, but neither action was effective. According to reports circulating on social media, the firefighters arrived at the scene without water in the fire truck, and the police could also do nothing for the victim.

Yuriel warned in his post that there could be more victims inside the vehicle, although this has not been officially confirmed yet. The exact causes of the accident are also unknown. At the time of writing this note, the authorities have not commented on the tragic incident.

The incident occurs in the context of an unprecedented blackout crisis affecting Cuba: in January 2026, the outages simultaneously impacted 63% of the country, and in September 2025, the fifth national blackout was recorded in less than two years, with interruptions lasting up to 28 consecutive hours.

The darkness on streets and avenues —with traffic lights off and street lighting out of service— increases the risk of nighttime traffic accidents in Cuba.

The inefficiency of the Cuban fire department is a documented and recurring problem: in April 2026, in Guantánamo, a unit ran out of water during a fire; in March 2022, in Havana, a truck arrived with so little water that another vehicle had to be awaited.

The Havanese Malecón has a tragic history. In February 2026, an accident at Malecón and Belascoaín resulted in at least one fatality. In May 2019, a classic car lost control, mounted the sidewalk, and ran over a crowd, leaving four dead and 21 injured. In April 2021, a Lada caught fire right on the Malecón and was completely destroyed.

Alfonso closed his testimony with a message for the victim's family: "We truly did everything we could to save them. My condolences from the bottom of my heart, I really am sorry."
