A young woman lost her life early Sunday morning on the Malecón in Havana after the car she was driving crashed into a streetlight pole at the intersection with Third Street in Vedado and caught fire completely. The area was experiencing a blackout at the time of the incident.

The incident was reported on social media by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada and a Facebook user identified as Yuriel Fernández, who posted videos showing the vehicle engulfed in flames in the middle of the street, surrounded by people trying to help.

Eyewitnesses described heart-wrenching scenes. The user identified as Yasmany Alfonso, who said he had been at the scene since the moment of the impact, recounted: "I saw the car from the moment it crashed. The one driving was a girl, a young white woman with short hair."

"Those of us who were there broke the glass of the back door to get her out, and when we opened the car, she was alive but unconscious. However, the fire intensified, and no matter how hard we tried, we couldn't get her out," Alfonso added.

Additionally, he recounted that a man tried to get into the burning vehicle to rescue the victim, but couldn't withstand the heat. "It pained me to see that we could have saved her, and we couldn't," he wrote.

The civilians present stopped a traffic patrol car in search of a fire extinguisher and sprayed water on the vehicle in an attempt to extinguish the fire, but neither of these actions were successful. According to reports circulating on social media, the firefighters arrived at the scene without water in their tanker truck, and the police were also unable to help the victim.

Yuriel warned in his post that there could be more victims within the vehicle, although this has not been officially confirmed so far. The exact causes of the accident are also unknown. At the time of writing this note, the authorities have not commented on the tragic event.

The incident occurs in the context of an unprecedented blackout crisis affecting Cuba: in January 2026, outages affected 63% of the country simultaneously, and in September 2025, the fifth national blackout was recorded in less than two years, with interruptions lasting up to 28 consecutive hours.

The darkness in streets and avenues —with traffic lights out and public lighting offline— increases the risk of nighttime traffic accidents in Cuba.

The inefficiency of the Cuban fire department is a documented and recurring problem: in April 2026, in Guantánamo, a unit ran out of water during a fire; in March 2022, in Havana, a truck arrived with so little water that another vehicle had to be waited for.

The Havanese Malecón has a tragic history. In February 2026, an accident at Malecón and Belascoaín resulted in at least one fatality. In May 2019, a vintage car lost control, mounted the sidewalk, and struck a crowd, leaving four dead and 21 injured. In April 2021, a Lada caught fire right on the Malecón and was completely destroyed.

Alfonso concluded his testimony with a message for the victim's family: "We truly did everything we could to save them. My deepest condolences, I genuinely feel for you."
