The Cuban content creator Gaby, known on TikTok as “La Pitón”, starred this Monday in one of those scenes that resonate with thousands of Cubans: trying a Burger King hamburger for the first time during a visit to the Dominican Republic.
In a 56-second video posted on her account @ladelapiton, Gaby shows the fries and the burger she ordered, and upon taking her first bite, she exclaims with a mix of surprise and Cuban humor: "In the name of the Father, it's bad, isn’t it?"
The reaction quickly resonated with its audience. The clip garnered 32,500 views, 1,765 likes, and 43 comments in less than 24 hours, figures that reflect the impact this type of content has among Cubans both on the island and abroad.
The account @ladelapiton is known for its family-friendly humor, particularly the antics of Gaby's mother, affectionately dubbed "Mamá Pitón." Other videos on the channel have exceeded 163,500 likes on the platform.
The moment captured by Gaby is not anecdotal: Burger King has no presence in Cuba, just like the other major international fast food chains, making the first visit to one of its locations a milestone for many Cubans traveling or emigrating abroad.
The Dominican Republic has become one of the most frequented destinations by Cubans in recent years. More than 100,000 Cubans traveled there during 2025, with a monthly record of 19,500 trips recorded in June of that year, according to migration data.
Burger King has been operating in the Caribbean country since 1994 and currently has 35 restaurants located in Santo Domingo, Santiago, Punta Cana, La Romana, Puerto Plata, and other cities.
The phenomenon of Cubans discovering fast food chains upon leaving the island has sparked a wave of viral videos on TikTok. In July 2024, Cuban Daniela, from the account @siempre.ellaxo, posted a video of her family newly arrived in the United States trying fast food for the first time, with similar reactions of amazement at everyday products found elsewhere in the world.
Cubans are also the foreign community with the highest number of naturalizations in the Dominican Republic in the last five years: 309 out of a total of 2,302 between 2019 and 2024, according to official Dominican figures. From 2018 to 2025, the country granted legal residency to more than 14,600 Cuban citizens.
At the end of the clip, Gaby shows the inside of the chicken piece and concludes with another phrase that sums up the experience: “But look at how the breast is.”
