"To hell with resignation": Elderly Cuban erupts against Díaz-Canel in video reflecting discontent on the island

A Cuban grandfather went viral after denouncing the accumulated trash, the lack of medications, blackouts, and the fuel crisis that is suffocating Cuba, right in the middle of the street.

A Cuban grandfather starred in a strong verbal protest against the regime of Miguel Díaz-Canel in a video shared on Facebook that quickly went viral. Published under the title "In His Own Words – Brave Cuban," the video has surpassed 18,000 views and features a passionate denunciation of the economic and social crisis the country is experiencing.

Standing in the street, the man begins to describe a daily reality for millions of Cubans: the accumulation of garbage and the deterioration of public services.

"With garbage directly on the streets. Four months, five months, which is what leads to diseases. There are no medications in the clinics, no thermometers, no syringes. And then we are overwhelmed," he claims.

His criticism extends to the food shortages, the partial dollarization of the economy, and the privileges that, he claims, are enjoyed by the top leaders of the country.

"The ministers have everything. They don’t leave Varadero, they don’t leave the Keys. We, on the other hand, don’t have rice, we don’t have dollars, and the country has been dollarized," she says.

The most direct accusations were directed at the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel, who was demanded to resign from his position.

"Hey, Canel? You just quit to hell," he expresses in one of the most striking moments of the video.

It also criticizes Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, whom it accuses of being disconnected from the reality of the Cuban people.

"Marrero, you who never leave France, you're looking quite chubby. You're good for nothing. You're a liar," she says.

Beyond the criticism, the man demands political changes. He calls for free elections, questions the role of the National Assembly, and accuses the authorities of having abandoned the Martian ideals they claim to uphold.

"Hold free elections, dissolve the parliament. What do we need a parliament for if it doesn't represent the people?" they ask.

The testimony also reflects the daily challenges faced by many Cuban families. It speaks of the high prices of sweets for children, the limitations in purchasing fuel through the digital appointment allocation system, and the prolonged blackouts.

"They turned the lights on at four in the morning, but what is this?" he laments.

His words reflect a context of deep crisis on the island. Cuba is facing a severe shortage of food, medicine, and fuel, while power outages are lasting for hours in much of the country, and the electrical system has experienced several national collapses so far in 2026.

The video concludes with a message addressed to Pope Leo XIV.

"Please pray that they come to their senses. May the people of Cuba be happy," the man asks.

The audiovisual piece adds to the numerous citizen complaints that have circulated on social media in recent months, where an increasing number of Cubans are using these platforms to publicly express their frustration over the decline in living conditions on the island.
