The reunion in Cuba that many are looking forward to: "She was expecting suitcases and two flesh-and-blood ones arrived."

An emigrated Cuban deceived her mother by telling her to go to the airport to pick up some suitcases. They were waiting for her and her son after two years of absence.

A Cuban émigré set a love trap for her mother: she sent her to the airport under the pretense of picking up some suitcases sent from abroad, and instead, she was waiting there with her son. The reunion video, posted on June 30 by Leidy Laura Durán on TikTok, has garnered over 95,000 views and touched the hearts of thousands of Cubans both on and off the island.

Upon seeing her daughter and grandson instead of the suitcases she was expecting, the woman reacted with a mix of disbelief and tears: "Oh my God! No way!" can be heard in the 46-second clip. Then, through her tears, she asked, "Oh my God, why are you doing this to me?"

Leidy Laura summarized the moment with a phrase that became the heart of the video: "She was expecting suitcases, and two flesh-and-blood beings arrived. Two years longing for that hug."

In the description of the post, the author wrote: "Returning home, returning to your roots is renewing the soul and putting a band-aid on the heart. Thank you God for this moment after two years."

The "false package" strategy—making relatives believe they are going to the airport to pick up a shipment when in fact they are there to welcome a loved one—has become a common tactic among emigrated Cubans who document their returns on social media.

This video is part of a viral trend that has been growing on TikTok for months under the hashtag #regresoacuba2026, where Cuban emigrants document their surprise reunions with family members after years of separation.

Similar cases have multiplied in recent weeks. On July 8, Lianet González surprised her mother at the airport using the same tactic of the fake package. On July 4, Daniela unexpectedly brought her family together, and the video reached 223,000 views. In March, another Cuban woman surprised her mother after four years hidden in a truck, accumulating almost 380,000 views.

The phenomenon has its roots in the most severe migration crisis in Cuba's recent history. Between 2021 and 2024, more than a million Cubans emigrated, reducing the island's population from 11.3 million to an estimated 8.6 to 8.8 million.

Visits by emigrants to Cuba fell 22.6% in 2025, with only 228,091 returns compared to the 294,816 recorded in 2024, making each reunion an even more emotionally charged event.

These numbers explain why videos like Leidy Laura's serve as a collective catharsis: millions of Cuban families, separated by exile and distance, see themselves in that embrace that arrived disguised as a suitcase.
