A tweet published in April 2017 by the official account of VTV Canal 8 has resurfaced strongly on social media, triggering a wave of jokes and ironic comments.
The reason: a statement from Delcy Rodríguez, which today sounds like it belongs to another era: "I feel happy every morning because I don't have to call Washington to receive orders".
The phrase was pronounced on April 27, 2017, at the height of chavismo's anti-imperialist rhetoric, when Rodríguez held the position of Minister of Popular Power for Foreign Relations.
Nine years later, the contrast between that speech and Venezuela's current political reality turned the tweet into an object of massive ridicule.
The comments came in quickly. “You don’t have to call, they call her,” wrote one user. Another noted that communication happens “through a WhatsApp group.”
A third party requested, "take a screenshot before it gets deleted," and there were those who simply stated that they had come by "just to have a little laugh at this tweet."
The trigger for the viral phenomenon is as striking as it is ironic: since January 2026, Rodríguez not only talks to Washington, but he does so with a frequency and warmth that would have been unimaginable during the time of his own declaration.
From anti-imperialist rhetoric to collaborating with Trump
After the capture of Nicolás Maduro on January 3, 2026, Rodríguez assumed the interim presidency of Venezuela and led one of the most abrupt diplomatic turns in the recent history of the continent.
On January 14, 2026, she confirmed a conversation that was "long, productive, and courteous" with Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, during which they discussed oil, minerals, trade, and security. Trump described her as a "fantastic" and "extraordinary" person.
In February 2026, Rodríguez publicly referred to Trump as a "partner and friend", marking a turning point in the bilateral relationship. That same month, she hosted the U.S. Secretary of Energy, Christopher Wright, at the Miraflores Palace.
On March 5, 2026, Venezuela and the United States formally restored their diplomatic relations, which had been severed since 2019. Weeks later, on April 1, Washington removed Rodríguez from the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctions list.
Direct contacts with the White House continued. On June 27, 2026, Trump and Rubio personally called Rodríguez to express their support following the earthquakes that shook Venezuela.
In parallel, both governments finalized energy agreements worth 900 million dollars and Washington authorized the sale of up to 50 million barrels of Venezuelan crude oil, valued at over 500 million dollars.
The contrast between Delcy Rodríguez in 2017, who boasted of not needing Washington, and in 2026, when she coordinates with Trump, Rubio, and U.S. cabinet secretaries, is precisely what turned that tweet into a piece of unintentional humor that internet users are not willing to overlook.
