The Ministry of the Interior (Minint) came forward this Saturday to claim the resolution of the homicide of Sergio Suco Martínez within less than 48 hours, which occurred on Sunday, July 12, in the Micro 70 neighborhood of Nueva Gerona, Isle of Youth, and took the opportunity to discredit the versions that circulated on social media.
According to the information shared on Facebook by the broadcaster Ramón Leyva Morales, known as Carapachibey Pinero, Minint forces in coordination with the Criminal Investigation System succeeded in apprehending the confessed perpetrator and recovering most of the items stolen from the victim.
This Saturday, the Minint headquarters in the area held a public event in front of Suco Martínez's home to partially return the stolen goods, in the presence of neighbors and family members who were still in shock.
The recovered items were handed over to the victim's niece and a close neighbor of the family, the source indicated.
The chief Mailen Briones Ballester, the first criminal investigation instructor in the Isle of Youth, stated to Radio Caribe, the local television center Islavisión, and to Carapachibey Pinero himself that the case is closed and that the versions circulating on social media are false.
"Since the event came to light, a multidisciplinary team was formed that, in less than 48 hours, managed to apprehend the responsible party and recover most of the stolen items. The case is completely clear, as the perpetrator confessed in detail what occurred at the scene," stated the officer.
Briones added that "the information disseminated on social media up to today is false" and advised the public to "rely on the municipality’s official media to know the true information," which follows the usual pattern of the Minint of debunking rumors and pointing to social media as a source of misinformation.
The note, written in a distinctly laudatory tone towards the law enforcement agencies, does not provide details about the identity of the detainee or the exact nature of the claims that the Minint labels as false.
The crime in Micro 70 is not an isolated incident on the Isle of Youth. In April, the elderly welder Dagoberto was stabbed and beheaded in his own home in Nueva Gerona during a nighttime blackout, allegedly due to a theft of about 80 dollars.
The pattern is repeated on a national scale: vulnerable victims, knife wounds, and robbery as the motive. The Cuban Observatory of Citizen Audit (OCAC) documented 2,833 verified crimes in 2025, an increase of 115% compared to 2024, with theft being the most frequent crime.
Julio has been especially violent. On July 12th, the day of the homicide in Nueva Gerona, the 40th femicide of the year in Cuba was confirmed.
On July 14, Yesneidy López Hernández was fatally stabbed by her ex-partner in Güines, Mayabeque, while her 15-year-old daughter was injured while trying to defend her.
On social media, Cubans reacted with skepticism to the official version. "They have normalized violence. It hurts to see what the country is becoming," wrote one user.
Another pointed out the contradiction from the Minint: "They say they solved the case in 48 hours, but they don't explain why there is so much insecurity or who is accountable for that."
Actor Luis Alberto García recently raised the alarm about the rise in crime and criticized that law enforcement prioritizes political repression over citizen security, while approximately 20% of the members of the Revolutionary National Police have left the force.
