An elderly citizen identified as Dagoberto, a welder by trade and well-known in his community, was murdered inside his own home in Gerona, a municipality in the Special Municipality of the Isle of Youth, during a nighttime blackout, in what appears to be a robbery.
According to preliminary reports shared by the Facebook page "Nio Reportando un Crimen," the victim was attacked from behind with a sharp object and subsequently subdued with force.
He was stabbed and then slit, he detailed.
According to the communicator, the preliminary motive for the crime appears to be a robbery of approximately 80 USD.
"Several individuals are in custody in connection with the case," he revealed.
The Isle of Youth is experiencing a severe energy crisis. In recent months, the long-standing myth that this territory was spared from the blackouts affecting the rest of the country has been shattered, and the situation has progressively worsened with generation deficits reaching 25.7 megawatts in September.
The darkness caused by power outages has become a factor facilitating the commission of crimes throughout Cuba. Recent statistics report 2,833 verified crimes in the country, an increase of 115%, with thefts being the most common offense, accounting for 1,536 cases.
The murder of Dagoberto adds to a string of violent crimes that have shaken the Cuban population.
Recently, an elderly man was murdered in Holguín while cooking at home, and in Santa Clara three family members were found murdered in their residence.
Elderly people are particularly vulnerable: in February of last year, an 83-year-old woman from Camagüey was brutally beaten during a blackout, in a case that shocked public opinion.
Experts and citizens point out that the security situation worsens due to the weakening of law enforcement, as 20% of police personnel have deserted the force, leaving entire communities in a state of increasing vulnerability to crime.
