The Cuban singer Danay Suárez revealed that Karol G included "Yo Aprendí" —one of her most emblematic songs— in her new album, in a collaboration that began from a chance meeting in Spain and reverses the roles of a duo that already has history.
On July 18, Danay shared the news in a video posted on her Instagram account where she described with excitement how this collaboration came about, which she considers one of the most significant of her career.
"I'm very excited because, first of all, it's a song I heard for the first time in 2017 at the Latin Grammys. It's a song that, no matter how many times I listen to it, I never get tired of it because it continues to provide me with personal lessons," said the artist.
"Yo Aprendí" originally belongs to the album Polvo de la Humedad by Danay Suárez and already had a previous connection with the Colombian artist: Karol G included it in her album Ocean in 2019 as track 16, with Danay as a featured artist. Now the roles are reversed: it is Danay's song that features Karol G as a collaborator.
The Cuban artist confessed that for years she wanted to propose a collaboration to Karol G, but her insecurity held her back: "I never dared to speak to Anaís Suárez, who is the artist behind the song, because I've always wanted her on my album, but I kept thinking, how is she going to see my music? I mean, if she knows me, will she listen to mine?"
The turning point came when Karol G was in Spain and saw Danay participating as a co-coach on La Voz España.
A message that Danay delivered on that program impacted the Colombian artist, who decided to write to her: "One day she saw me speaking about a message that I shared, which moved her and caused something within her, and she reached out to me."
That contact came at the perfect moment: "When I was finishing the album, I received that message that says in La Voz, it moved me, it worked for me, how nice that the world can get to know that Karol G," Danay recounted.
The Cuban woman didn't hesitate to seize the opportunity: "It was my perfect chance to tell her I'm wrapping up the album, I love your song, I adore your song, we made it together, and I think it's a song with a very significant purpose."
Danay Suárez is one of the most prominent female voices from Cuba of her generation, with roots in rap, hip hop, jazz, and fusion with traditional music from the Island.
In 2017, he received four nominations for the Latin Grammy Awards for his album Palabras Manuales, including Best New Artist and Album of the Year.
Karol G, for her part, comes off a year of resounding successes: her album Tropicoqueta, released in June 2025, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 with 57,000 equivalent units in its first week and reached number one on the Top Latin Albums chart.
At the end of the video, Danay proudly summarized what this collaboration means to her: "That threat is about opening the door to the chair, telling her how she is, madam, she is always at home."
