A 15-year-old teenager died this Monday in Santiago de Cuba after falling from a bridge located on the Refinery Road, at the height of kilometer two and a half, under circumstances that are still under investigation.
Aris Arias Batalla, provincial chief of Operations and Relief for the Red Cross branch, identified the victim as Richard Manuel Saldívar Ramos, a resident of the Vista Hermosa neighborhood.
According to Arias, some witnesses claimed that the teenager suffered an apparent seizure while on the bridge, which may have caused him to fall into the water.
The preliminary report indicates that the cause of death was drowning by submersion. Investigators are looking into the incident to clarify exactly what happened.
The Rescue and Salvage Detachment of the Santiago de Cuba Fire Department was the first unit to respond to the incident.
Arias explicitly clarified that this is "preliminary information," meaning that new details may emerge as the investigation progresses.
This death adds to a series of fatal accidents in bodies of water and elevated structures that have affected Santiago de Cuba and other provinces in recent months.
In March, a 38-year-old cyclist died after falling from the San Juan bridge in Altavista, on the Siboney road, under similar circumstances.
Two months later, a community in Las Tunas mourned the death of a 15-year-old boy found dead in the province.
The discovery occurred in the vicinity of the sugar mill in the municipality, following an intensive search conducted by family, friends, and neighbors.
In June, the body of a 23-year-old man was recovered on the coast of Chivirico, in the municipality of Guamá, by technicians from the same rescue team.
