A 74-year-old woman identified by her family as Geraldine Byrd is in critical condition this morning after being struck by a vehicle right in front of her home in the southwest area of Miami-Dade, according to Telemundo 51.
The Sheriff's Office of the county received the report of the crash around 2:28 a.m. in the area of 15360 SW 295th Street. The paramedics who arrived at the scene transported the victim by helicopter to Jackson South Medical Center, the primary trauma center in the southern county.
Byrd's daughter-in-law, who was present at the scene, explained to authorities that the woman had spent the night at the Miccosukee Casino and that upon returning home, she parked the vehicle. As she was about to open the gate to the property, another car struck her.
Neighbors heard a loud thud, and when they went outside, they found the elderly woman lying on the ground.
Authorities confirmed the arrest of a man in connection with the incident, but did not disclose his identity or the possible charges he may face. The investigation remained ongoing at the time of this report.
The case adds to a concerning trend in the county. Between 2020 and 2024, pedestrian accidents in Miami-Dade increased by more than 50%, according to data from the County Transportation Planning Organization. In 2025 alone, there were 942 collisions with pedestrians and 32 fatalities.
In the period from 2019 to 2023, the county recorded 6,978 serious accidents resulting in 8,110 people dead or severely injured, and in 2023, 20% of the cases involved pedestrians, according to chilling traffic data in Miami.
Older adults are among the most vulnerable pedestrians in these statistics. In August 2025, Enrique De Moya, 69 years old, was killed in a hit-and-run in northwest Miami-Dade by a driver who fled the scene. In March 2026, authorities were searching for another hit-and-run driver following another violent collision in the county.
The health status of Geraldine Byrd had not been officially updated by the hospital at the time of publication, and the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
