A 40-year-old Cuban with legal residency in Mexico was arrested on Monday in the municipality of San Pedro Tlaquepaque, in the Guadalajara metropolitan area, Jalisco, after allegedly firing shots at the facade of a house from a moving car. Upon verifying his identity, authorities also discovered that he had an outstanding arrest warrant for theft.
According to the outlet Página 24 Jalisco, the incident occurred at the intersection of López Cotilla and Morelos streets, in the Hidalgo neighborhood, where neighbors called the emergency number to report that a man was firing shots from a vehicle.
The Municipal Preventive Police Department launched an operation in the area and managed to intercept the suspect while he was still driving the car identified by the complainants. No injuries were reported during the incident.
During the inspection of the location, the agents found two discharged 9mm shell casings on the public thoroughfare, which were secured as evidence to be included in the investigation file.
However, during the search of the detainee, the firearm that he allegedly used was not found. Authorities believe he may have discarded it at some point along the route before being apprehended by the police.
Upon checking his information on the security platforms, the officers confirmed that the man had an active arrest warrant for theft, which is why he was placed at the disposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
It will now be up to the ministerial authority to determine their legal status and establish their potential responsibility both for the shots fired at the property and for the proceedings arising from the pending court order.
Other recent cases
The arrest occurs in a context where other Cuban citizens living in Mexico have also been detained for various offenses.
In May 2025, another 40-year-old Cuban was arrested in Guadalajara following a police chase that involved an exchange of gunfire at a pawn shop. Similar to this case, authorities discovered that he had an outstanding arrest warrant for theft in Baja California.
More recently, in May 2026, four Cubans were arrested in Cancun following a shooting that left a Cuban singer seriously injured.
Legal residency in Mexico does not change the obligation of any foreigner to answer to justice for crimes they allegedly commit in Mexican territory. The Public Prosecutor's Office will be responsible for determining the legal status of the detained individual as the investigation progresses.
