Ahymed Socorro Rodríguez, a Cuban lawyer residing in Miami, is currently in the custody of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach, Broward, Florida, as confirmed by the official detainee locator of the agency.
The case has gained relevance due to the possible familial connection of the detainee with Roberto Socorro García, a diplomat from the Cuban regime who was expelled from the United States over two decades ago.
“Records from the Cuban government confirm that Ahymed Socorro Rodríguez is registered at the same address in Cuba as Roberto Socorro García, a diplomat and current counselor at the Cuban Embassy in Guatemala”, according to Telemundo 51.
The media itself clarifies that a human rights activist familiar with the case believes that the detained woman may be the daughter of Socorro García, but has not been able to independently confirm that family relationship.
Other outlets, such as Diario de las Américas, directly identify her as the daughter of the diplomat, relying on the shared last names with his wife, Iliana Aymee Rodríguez Hada, listed in the U.S. diplomatic directories of 2001 and 2002.
The father: Expelled for "incompatible activities" and links to criminals
Roberto Socorro García was declared persona non grata by the Department of State on December 19, 2003, while serving as the third secretary of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington.
The U.S. administration granted him 10 days to leave the country, claiming he had engaged in "activities incompatible with his diplomatic duties."
Officials of the time also linked him to criminal elements and activities related to drug trafficking, although no evidence was disclosed and no formal legal charges were reported.
A State Department official emphasized that "this measure differs from previous expulsions of Cuban diplomats and those of other nationalities for activities incompatible with their diplomatic status."
The Cuban Foreign Ministry rejected all the accusations, describing them as "a blatant lie and a gross manipulation of reality."
Currently, Socorro García serves as Minister Counselor - the second highest position - at the Embassy of Cuba in Guatemala.
The profile of the detainee: From the MININT university to the law firms of Miami
Ahymed Socorro Rodríguez arrived in the United States in 2021 on a visa.
According to his LinkedIn profile, he graduated in Law from the University of Havana in the 2012-2013 academic year, was a member of the Union of Young Communists (UJC), and worked as a professor at the Higher Institute "Eliseo Reyes Rodríguez" - the university of the Ministry of Interior (MININT) - between 2013 and 2014.
She subsequently worked as a lawyer for the Specialized Services Office, a firm affiliated with the National Organization of Collective Law Firms of Cuba and specializing in representing foreign companies operating on the island for nearly seven years.
Once in Miami, I worked as a paralegal at the Harper Meyer law firm.
His name was listed among the candidates to receive a Master's degree in International Law from the University of Miami in December 2025.
In April 2025, in response to publications regarding her ties to regime structures, she stated that 99.9% of what was published about her was false.
ICE has not explained the reasons, nor does the pattern stop
The ICE public record does not specify when, where, or why the lawyer was arrested, nor whether she appeared before an immigration judge or if she can request her release on bail.
The case is part of a series of actions by ICE against individuals connected to figures of the Cuban government in Florida.
Among the precedents are the arrest of Alina Rosales Aguirreurreta, identified as the daughter of General Ulises Rosales del Toro, and the arrest of Adys Lastres Morera, sister of the head of GAESA, both arrested last May.
The arrests of Cubans by ICE increased by 463% between October 2024 and January 2026, with Florida being the main hotspot.
As long as ICE does not reveal the basis of the dossier, any connection between the detention of Socorro Rodríguez and the diplomatic background of her alleged father will remain a matter of speculation.
