opens the day this Monday, August 10, with mixed signals.
At 10:00 a.m. (Cuban local time), the US dollar starts without changes compared to the previous day, the euro loses ground for the second consecutive day, and the Convertible Currency (MLC) shows a slight rebound.
Summary of rates
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 673 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 776 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 458 CUP (indicative value).
The dollar remains unchanged
The US dollar is trading at 673 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, with a buying rate of 670 CUP and a selling rate of 675 CUP.
It remains unchanged compared to the previous day and also against the quotation from seven days ago, reflecting sustained stability in the short term.
Exchange Rate Evolution
Compared to 30 days ago, the dollar has risen by 12.5 pesos, representing an increase of 1.9%. However, it is important to note that this comparison may partly reflect adjustments in the methodology of the index.
In the last month, the US dollar has fluctuated between a low of 655 CUP and a high of 675 CUP in the informal market.
The euro declines
The euro starts this Monday at 776 Cuban pesos (CUP) as an average value, with a buying price of 766 CUP and a selling price of 785 CUP.
This represents a drop of two pesos compared to the previous session, where an average value of 778 CUP was reported.
The downward trend also extends into the weekly horizon: compared to seven days ago, the euro has lost 11.5 pesos, a decline of 1.5%.
In the last month, the European currency has fluctuated between a minimum of 745 CUP and a maximum of 790 CUP.
Despite the recent setback, it maintains its advantage over the dollar, driven by limited supply and the demand from those receiving remittances from Europe.
The MLC, on the rise but with caution
The MLC records an average value of 458 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the opening this Monday, with a buying price of 432 CUP and a selling price of 483 CUP.
This represents an increase of eight pesos compared to the previous day, a rise of 1.8%.
However, the data for this digital currency is flagged with a warning due to low trading volumes during this time frame, so its quotation should be regarded as indicative.
In the weekly comparison, the MLC has accumulated a drop of 22.5 pesos compared to seven days ago (-4.7%).
In the last month, it has fluctuated between 425 and 496 CUP.
Without a physical existence, its use is limited to state-owned businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
The gap with the official rate
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III), at 621 CUP per dollar and 717 CUP per euro, remains well below the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.
The difference between the official price and the informal one exceeds 50 pesos in the case of the dollar and hovers around 59 pesos for the euro.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible currency mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and does not meet the actual demand for foreign currency among the population.
In the last month, the official exchange rate of the dollar has risen from 592 to 621 CUP, and that of the euro from 676 to 717 CUP, but the parallel market continues to operate with a significant premium over those values.
The informal currency market in Cuba operates outside of state financial institutions, through networks of buying and selling among individuals. Although the Cuban regime does not officially recognize it, it is the market that practically determines the real purchasing power of Cubans.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every variation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.
