The regime of Nicaragua began installing a metal sculpture in honor of Fidel Castro on Bolívar to Chávez Avenue in Managua, as part of the celebrations for the centenary of the birth of the deceased Cuban dictator.
The installation was announced this Monday by the Nicaraguan co-president Rosario Murillo, according to the official media El 19 Digital.
The source did not provide details about the dimensions of the work, its cost, the exact location on the avenue where it will be placed, or the anticipated date for its inauguration, although it could coincide with Castro's birthday.
Murillo stated that Nicaragua will participate this week in the activities organized for the one hundred years since the birth of Castro, which is commemorated on Thursday, August 13. "This week we will be participating from this blessed Nicaragua in the centenary celebrations of Fidel," she expressed.
The co-chair announced that the Sandinista regime will hold events in universities and municipalities, while the sculpture is installed on the Bolívar to Chávez avenue.
The work was carried out by workers from the National Electric Transmission Company (ENATREL), whom Murillo credited with creating "another marvel." "The workers of ENATREL have made another marvel, a metal sculpture that is being installed with great honor and pride on the Bolívar to Chávez avenue," he stated.
The Sandinista leader stated that the piece aims to honor what she described as the "leader of the Our American and Caribbean Revolution" and recalled that Castro visited Nicaragua.
Murillo stated that the Cuban dictator inspired revolutionary struggles and supported the Nicaraguan people, whom he described as "brave" and "heroic," affirming that they "give their lives for peace."
The co-chair concluded her speech by invoking "the blessing" and "the favor of God" and assured that Nicaragua will continue to create the future that, she said, the country deserves, "free from poverty."
The event coincides with an intense agenda for the centenary of Castro in Cuba. The Cuban regime inaugurated the I International Colloquium "Fidel: Legacy and Future" in Havana, with more than 1,500 delegates from 63 countries, including over a thousand foreigners.
The event will span three days at the Palace of Conventions and other venues in the Cuban capital. During the inauguration, Miguel Díaz-Canel referred to the attendees as "ambassadors of truth" and "witnesses that Cuba does not surrender."
It is one of the largest displays of propaganda, a lavish use of resources, and a cult of personality promoted by the Cuban regime in honor of the deceased dictator, amidst one of the worst economic crises in the island's history.
The tribute announced by Nicaragua adds to other expressions of praise for Castro outside the island. In November 2022, Díaz-Canel and Vladimir Putin inaugurated a statue of the Cuban dictator in Moscow, which cost around $330,000. The Russian sculpture, placed in a square in the Moscow neighborhood of Sokol, depicts Castro standing, dressed in military uniform and beret, on a stone block with the inscription "Cuba."
In August 2025, the Cuban Embassy and the Láncara-Cuba Friendship Association symbolically planted a tree in honor of Castro in Láncara, Galicia, the municipality where his father was born. The event took place at the Ángel Castro Museum House and was attended by the Cuban ambassador to Spain, Galician authorities, political and trade union organizations, Cubans residing in the country, and solidarity groups with the regime.
