New drop in currency values in Cuba: Here's how the dollar, euro, and MLC open

The informal currency market in Cuba opens this Tuesday with declines in its three main benchmarks.

The United States dollar drops five pesos, now at 668 CUP; the euro loses eight and opens at 768 CUP; while the MLC (Freely Convertible Currency) falls 15 pesos to 443 CUP.

The values correspond to the opening at 10:00 a.m. this Tuesday, according to the index of .

The dollar is experiencing a daily decline of 0.7%, falling from 673 to 668 CUP. Compared to the 673 pesos from a week ago, it has also lost five CUP, which corresponds to a decrease of 0.7%.

Exchange Rate Evolution

For its part, the euro declines by 1% compared to the 776 CUP from the day before. Its weekly drop is more pronounced: it loses 16 pesos, 2%, compared to the 784 CUP registered seven days ago.

The MLC experiences the largest percentage drop since its opening. Its average value decreases from 458 to 443 CUP, a daily reduction of 15 pesos or 3.3%. Over the course of seven days, it has accumulated a loss of 39 CUP, equivalent to 8.1%, from 482 pesos.

The comparison with 30 days ago shows a different scenario. The dollar gains 7.5 CUP, an increase of 1.1%, compared to the 660 pesos at that time; the euro rises by 18.5 CUP, up 2.5%, from 749; and the MLC remains unchanged at 443 CUP.

During the last month, the dollar has ranged between a minimum of 655 CUP and a maximum of 675. The euro has fluctuated between 748 and 790 CUP, while the MLC has recorded values between 413 and 496 CUP.

The official rate of the Central Bank of Cuba for Segment III, applicable to the general public and comparable to the informal market, is set this Tuesday at 624 CUP per dollar and 721 CUP per euro.

Over the past 30 days, the official dollar rose from 592 to 624 CUP, representing its minimum and maximum for the period, respectively. The official euro increased from 676 to 721 CUP, with a minimum of 674 and a maximum of 721.

At the average opening value of the informal market, the approximate equivalents for dollar bills are:

  • 1 USD = 668 CUP
  • 5 USD = 3,338 CUP
  • 10 USD = 6,675 CUP
  • 20 USD = 13,350 CUP
  • 50 USD = 33,375 CUP
  • 100 USD = 66,750 CUP

For banknotes denominated in euros, the equivalents are:

  • 5 EUR = 3.838 CUP
  • 10 EUR = 7.675 CUP
  • 20 EUR = 15,350 CUP
  • 50 EUR = 38.375 CUP
  • 100 EUR = 76,750 CUP
