The informal foreign exchange market in Cuba closes this Monday, August 10, 2026, with declines in the major currencies. At 8:00 PM, local Cuban time, places the US dollar at 670 Cuban pesos, the euro at 773 pesos, and the MLC around 423 pesos, although this last figure is merely indicative due to the lack of available data during this time frame.
The US dollar is quoted at 670 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the close of this Monday. This represents a decline of 2.5 pesos compared to the previous day, when the currency closed at 673 CUP. The same exchange rate of 673 pesos was recorded seven days ago, which places the weekly loss at 2.5 pesos (-0.4%). In a monthly perspective, the dollar has gained 10 pesos compared to the 660 CUP of 30 days ago, although this comparison should be taken with caution as it may partially reflect methodological adjustments of the index. In the last 30 days, the US currency has fluctuated between a low of 655 and a high of 675 pesos in the informal market. It continues to dictate the trends of the informal market in a context of structural currency shortages.
The euro is trading at 773 Cuban pesos (CUP) at the close of the day. This represents a drop of 5 pesos compared to the previous day, when the European currency closed at 778 CUP. The downward trend is also evident over the weekly horizon: seven days ago, the euro was at 785 pesos, indicating a decline of 12.5 pesos over the week (-1.6%). Compared to 30 days ago, when it was priced at 750 pesos, it has gained 22.5 pesos, although this variation may also reflect methodological adjustments of the index. In the last month, the euro has reached a high of 790 and a low of 745 pesos. It is established as the most expensive currency in the Cuban parallel market, surpassing the dollar by 103 pesos.
The MLC ends the day around 423 Cuban pesos (CUP), although this figure should be considered indicative due to the low volume of operations recorded during this time frame. Compared to the previous day, when the average value was 446 CUP, the apparent decline is 23 pesos (-5.2%), a variation that should be interpreted with caution precisely because of the limited sample available. In the past week, the decline is even more pronounced: seven days ago, the MLC was trading at 489 pesos. With no physical existence, its use is limited to the state-run stores that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.
Exchange Rate Evolution
- Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 670 CUP.
- Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 773 CUP.
- Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 423 CUP (indicative value, few data).
The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) remains at 621 CUP per dollar and 717 CUP per euro, significantly lower than the values that prevail in everyday practice in the informal currency market.
Although Segment III was introduced as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains very distant from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population. The gap between the official and informal rates reflects the persistent shortage of foreign currency in the state banking system and the high demand for dollars and euros from the population, whether for emigrating, importing goods, safeguarding savings, or making purchases in the private sector.
In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state salaries, and increasing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly impacts internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.
The Exchange Rate of CiberCuba is an index of the informal Cuban market created through the automated analysis of thousands of foreign exchange postings in Telegram and Facebook groups; the calculation excludes atypical offers and spam messages, weighs each transaction according to its age, and consolidates a representative value that is updated several times a day.
