The lifeless body of a baby was found on Wednesday inside a cardboard box at a trash dump located at the corner of Virtudes and Belascoaín in Central Havana.
The case details were published on Facebook by the Cuban activist Idelisa Diasniurka Salcedo Verdecia. She described the finding as "truly heartbreaking." CiberCuba has not been able to independently confirm this news. Cuban authorities have not issued any official statement.
The activist reported that the deceased baby weighed approximately eight pounds and was found in a cardboard box among the trash. She noted that the police officers cordoned off the area and prohibited those present from recording the scene.
On his part, content creator Niover Licea (Nio reporting a crime) released a video showing the moment when police officers escort a woman with her face covered out of a nearby house, identified by neighbors as the possible suspect.
The influencer claims that the baby's body still showed signs of moisture and apparently recent fluids when it was found, and remained at the location until after 2:00 PM, even though the police supposedly arrived about half an hour after the initial report.
As of the time this news is being published, none of the consulted sources are aware of the exact circumstances surrounding the baby's death, and there is no official confirmation regarding the responsibility of the woman appearing in the video.
Salcedo Verdecia called for a transparent investigation: "The life of that baby matters, and this incident cannot go unanswered."
A pattern that repeats in Cuba
In recent years, several similar discoveries have been reported in Cuba, generating outrage on social media, but they have rarely received an official response.
In June 2025, the discovery of a lifeless newborn in a dumpster was reported in Infanta and Santa Rosa, in the Cerro municipality of Havana, with no statement from the authorities.
In December of that same year, another baby was found deceased next to containers in Santo Suárez, Diez de Octubre.
In June 2024, a premature baby was found floating in the Bay of Havana and in November 2023, another newborn was discovered dead in a garbage container in San Isidro, Old Havana.
Cases are not only reported in the capital. In 2023, a woman was arrested in Pinar del Río after the body of a newborn was found in a garbage bin.
These terrible events take place within the context of an ongoing economic, political, and social crisis that is worsening continuously in Cuba, coinciding with a significant decline in indicators such as infant mortality. The country saw an increase from 4.0 per 1,000 live births in 2018 to 9.8 in 2026, according to figures discussed by the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel this week.
