The Island of Youth has been practically without electricity since 6:00 a.m. this Tuesday due to a fuel shortage for power generation and delays in the arrival of a ship, while only energy is maintained for the hospital and water pumping.

The channel Isla Visión shared on Monday the announcement from the Electric Company of the territory, which reported that the impact affects the entire special municipality and attributed the measure to a lack of fuel and delays in the arrival of the ship.

The entity clarified that the photovoltaic circuits A230 and A030 will be energized between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

With this schedule, a generating unit will operate at 75% of its capacity.

In addition to leaving the population almost in the dark, the company requested "understanding, support, and discipline" to confront a "complex scenario" caused by the lack of fuel and the delay in the ship's arrival.

The situation represents a further escalation of an electrical crisis that in February necessitated extending blackouts in four-hour cycles due to a shortage of fuel for generation.

The deterioration continued in the following months, and by the end of May, the general director of the Electric Union, Rubén Campos Olmo, acknowledged that Isla de la Juventud was operating with about six hours of electricity a day, despite having been considered one of the most stable energy territories in the country for years.

By July, residents reported periods of only two hours of electrical service, while other records documented outages of up to 22 hours daily.

The shortage is part of a fuel crisis that affects the entire country.

In April, the Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, acknowledged that Cuba needed eight fuel ships each month to sustain the economy and electricity generation, but between December 8, 2025, and the end of April 2026, only one had been received, illustrating the collapse and crisis the nation is experiencing.
