opens this Friday, August 21, with a tone of general calm.

At 10:00 a.m., local Cuban time, the US dollar and the euro remain unchanged compared to the previous day, while the MLC shows a slight decline that, given the limited volume of available data, should be considered as a guiding value.

Summary of exchange rates

  • Exchange rate of the dollar USD to CUP: 663 CUP.
  • Exchange rate of the euro EUR to CUP: 750 CUP.
  • Exchange rate from MLC to CUP: 467 CUP (indicative value, limited data).

The dollar remains unchanged

The U.S. dollar is quoted at 663 Cuban pesos (CUP) in the informal market, with a buying price of 660 CUP and a selling price of 665 CUP. It remains unchanged compared to the previous trading day.

In the last week, the dollar has decreased by just 2 pesos, from 665 CUP seven days ago, which equates to a drop of 0.4%.

Exchange Rate Evolution

Compared to 30 days ago, when it was at 668 CUP, the decrease is 5 pesos (-0.7%), although this comparison may partially reflect adjustments in the index methodology rather than just market movement.

In the last month, the dollar has fluctuated between a maximum of 675 CUP and a minimum of 663 CUP. It continues to set the tone of the informal market in a context of structural scarcity of foreign currency.

The euro, stable but with a weekly downward trend

The euro is priced at 750 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a buying rate of 740 CUP and a selling rate of 760 CUP.

It remains unchanged compared to the previous session. However, in the weekly comparison, it shows a decline of 10 pesos compared to the 760 CUP from seven days ago, a drop of 1.3%.

Thirty days ago, it was at 775 CUP, which represents a decrease of 25 pesos (-3.2%), although this figure should be interpreted cautiously as it may include methodological adjustments.

In the last month, the euro has reached a high of 790 CUP and a low of 750 CUP, the level it is at today.

It maintains its advantage over the dollar, fueled by limited supply and demand from those receiving remittances from Europe.

The MLC, indicative value on the decline

The MLC is around 467 Cuban pesos (CUP), with a purchase price of 442 CUP and a selling price of 492 CUP.

This represents a decrease of 4 pesos compared to the 471 CUP from the previous day (-0.8%), although this figure should be regarded with caution due to the low volume of publications available during this time frame.

In the last week, the MLC has risen by 10.5 pesos compared to the 457 CUP of seven days ago (+2.3%), and over the last month, it has accumulated an increase of 28 pesos from the 439 CUP of 30 days ago (+6.4%), although this comparison may also reflect methodological adjustments.

Without physical existence, its use is limited to state-run businesses that accept it, which restricts its circulation compared to cash currencies.

The gap with the official rate

The official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Cuba (Segment III) is 635 CUP per dollar and 742 CUP per euro, which remains significantly below the values that govern everyday transactions in the informal currency market.

In the case of the dollar, the difference between the official price and the informal one is 28 pesos; for the euro, it is 8 pesos.

Although Segment III was presented as a more flexible exchange mechanism, its official rate remains far from that of the informal market and fails to meet the actual demand for foreign currency from the population.

It is worth noting that the official exchange rate of the dollar has risen from 596 CUP on July 22 to the current 635 CUP, an increase of 39 pesos in just one month, which reflects the sustained pressure on the Cuban peso even within the official channel.

    Market context

In a scenario of sustained inflation, low state wages, and a growing partial dollarization of the economy, every fluctuation in the informal market directly affects internal prices and the purchasing power of Cubans.

The stability of the dollar and the euro today does not bring relief to the population: prices remain at historically high levels, and the gap between the average salary in pesos and the actual cost of foreign currencies continues to be a structural obstacle for millions of families.

The informal currency market in Cuba operates outside of the state financial institutions, through networks of buying and selling among individuals.
Although the Cuban regime does not officially recognize it, it is the market that practically determines the real purchasing power of Cubans.
