The Cuban actress Miriam Socarrás, age 85, revealed that she has not seen her only son for eight years and has yet to meet her twin granddaughters in person, in an interview published Thursday by the YouTube channel Cubamastv.

The confession took place during the podcast Todos Hablan, hosted by actor Jorge Martínez, when he asked her if she held any sorrow in her heart. "I don’t know my granddaughters, and I haven’t seen my son, the only son I have, in eight years," Socarrás responded with noticeable emotion.

"That's something very painful," he emphasized.

His son, Mauricio Posada Socarrás, 54 years old, resides in Miami and is the father of two seven-year-old twin girls.

The artist explained that Mauricio does not travel to Cuba for health reasons: the girls were very sickly in their early years, and he fears exposing them to viruses and the hygiene conditions on the island.

Socarrás mentioned that a possible solution would be to meet in the Dominican Republic, as many Cuban families separated by emigration do, but his son is not enthusiastic about that option.

"The distance," he said, "is a wound that never heals. 'I don't know my granddaughters; it's nice over the Internet, but it's not the same. To feel them, touch them, smell them,' he expressed."

And she revealed what she tells her son when they talk: "I want to feel your scent, to touch you, to laugh with you, to do whatever makes me happy. That is something so important for mothers."

Despite the pain, Socarrás dismissed the idea of emigrating, as many people have suggested. "Why would I leave Cuba if I was born here?" He acknowledged that he has been offered the opportunity to stay in Mexico and Spain, but he reaffirmed his strong attachment to his homeland.

In Havana, she lives with her 38-year-old grandson, whom she calls "my sun that lights my way," and she maintains an active schedule: she hosts the television magazine "Ruta 10" on Cubavisión and has just finished filming a telenovela.

The interview also captured his sorrow over the deterioration of Old Havana, where he was born on Lamparilla Street. He described streets with sewage, accumulated garbage, and worms in the walls. "There are sewage and trash that have been there for many months. I can't see that because it pains me; it makes me want to cry," he stated.

Socarrás, who celebrated her 85th birthday last April surrounded by colleagues from the Cuban artistic world, is one of the most beloved figures in the island's film and television industry, with a filmography of over 20 ICAIC films and 16 years as a host at the Cabaret Tropicana.

In 2025, he participated in the Brazilian film "O último azul," directed by Gabriel Mascaro, which won the Grand Jury Prize at that year's Berlinale.
