Kenya Glasgow, 40 years old, was identified as the mother who passed away this Sunday along with her two-year-old son after being struck by lightning in Margate, a city in Broward County, Florida, located about 50 kilometers north of Miami.
According to Local 10 News, which had access to the police report, emergency services received a call to the emergency number around 2:30 p.m., after it was reported that two people had been struck by a lightning strike and were lying on a sidewalk in the 7900 block of Northwest 1st Street.
The first responders immediately began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers on-site.
Glasgow was transferred to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach, while the boy —whose identity has not been publicly revealed— was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale under police escort.
Despite the efforts of the emergency staff and medical teams at both hospitals, mother and child passed away shortly after their arrival.
This note updates information published a few hours earlier, when the identities of the victims were still unknown and the death of the minor had not been confirmed.
The case remains under investigation by the Margate Police Department.
The tragedy occurs during an exceptionally intense thunderstorm season in Florida. The state surpassed 2.3 million lightning strikes by mid-August, with days recording more than 90,000 strikes in 24 hours.
Before this incident, Florida had already recorded at least four confirmed lightning fatalities in 2026, according to data from the National Weather Service.
Historically, Florida is the most dangerous state in the country in this regard: between 2016 and 2025, it recorded 51 lightning-related deaths, more than any other state, according to the National Lightning Safety Council.
In 2025, Florida also led the nation in insurance claims for damage caused by lightning, with over 5,100 claims and 186 million dollars in insured losses.
"The Margate police express their deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims during this very difficult time," stated the department in its official statement.
