Kenya Glasgow, 31 years old, was identified as the mother who died this Sunday along with her two-year-old daughter after being struck by lightning in Margate, a city in Broward County, Florida, located about 50 kilometers north of Miami.
According to reports from Local 10 News, which obtained the police report, emergency services received a call to the emergency number around 2:30 PM, reporting that two people had been struck by lightning and were lying on a sidewalk in the 7900 block of Northwest 1st Street.
The first responders immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) maneuvers on site.
Glasgow was transported to North Broward Medical Center in Deerfield Beach, while the child —whose identity has not been publicly disclosed— was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale under police escort.
Despite the efforts of the emergency personnel and medical teams at both hospitals, mother and daughter passed away shortly after their arrival.
The case is still under investigation by the Margate Police Department.
The tragedy occurs during an especially intense thunderstorm season in Florida. The state surpassed 2.3 million lightning strikes in mid-August, with days recording more than 90,000 strikes in 24 hours.
Before this incident, Florida had already recorded at least four confirmed lightning deaths so far in 2026, according to data from the National Weather Service.
Historically, Florida is the most dangerous state in the country in this regard: between 2016 and 2025, it recorded 51 deaths from lightning, more than any other state, according to the National Lightning Safety Council.
In 2025, Florida also led the nation in insurance claims for damage caused by lightning, with over 5,100 claims and 186 million dollars in insured losses.
"The Margate police express their deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victims during these very difficult times," the department stated in its official statement.
This note updates a report published hours earlier, when the identities of the victims were still unknown and the death of the minor had not yet been confirmed.
