When Mia Dio received the Miss Universe Cuba 2026 crown, she raised her hand and made an "L" with her fingers. It was neither an accident nor a spontaneous gesture: it was completely intentional. And the new queen did not hesitate to explain on Instagram the meaning of that moment, which has already circulated widely on social media.
"When I was crowned Miss Universe Cuba, I made an 'L' with my hand. It was intentional. L for Liberty," she wrote in her post, which accumulated nearly 36,000 likes and 674 comments in just a few hours.
The 25-year-old Cuban-American, born in Miami and representing Isla de la Juventud in the competition, made it clear from the very beginning that her reign would not be just about runways and pretty photos.
"Representing Cuba on a global stage means much more to me than just wearing a crown," she wrote on her profile, where she has over 1.3 million followers. "My promise as Miss Universe Cuba is to use every platform I am given to amplify the voices and stories of the Cuban people, especially those of the women who have shown us what courage truly means."
In that spirit, Mia Dio named figures and movements with a very specific political weight: the activist Anna Bensi and the project El 4tico, young voices that denounce the lack of freedom of expression in Cuba; the Damas de Blanco, women who marched dressed in white demanding the release of their imprisoned relatives; and the phrase "Patria y Vida", which in 2021 transformed from being a song into the anthem of an entire generation that dared to dream of a different Cuba.
"That L was for them. For those who spoke up. For those who marched. For those who created. For those who had to leave everything behind. And for those who still wait for the day they can see a free Cuba," he wrote.
The reaction from her followers was swift. The singer and activist Beatriz Luengo, co-author of the documentary about "Patria y Vida" and partner of Yotuel Romero, left a message that garnered over 200 likes: "You are a great representative of Cuba because you understand what you represent and are unafraid to raise your voice. We are very proud of you."
Another comment that resonated was from a follower who responded to those questioning whether Mia truly represents Cuba: "And they still dare to say that this queen doesn't represent us. She's not just raising her voice now because she's a queen; she's been doing it for years since I've been following her."
Mia Dio has roots in the Cuban exile community that go far beyond her personal history. She is the granddaughter of José "Pepe" Cancio, a veteran of Brigade 2506 who participated in the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961, and a relative of Sylvia Iriondo, president of M.A.R. por Cuba.
This is not the first time she has competed: in Miss Universe Cuba 2025, she reached the Top 5, although she had to deal with facial paralysis caused by a poorly administered Botox injection to treat her temporomandibular disorder. This time, she achieved the highest honor.
Now she is facing the biggest stage: Miss Universe 2026, scheduled for November 24 at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico. And she has already informed everyone what she wants to see in the stands: "When you see me compete in Puerto Rico, I invite you, Cuban or not, to raise your hand with me and make an L for Liberty. Let it be a small gesture with a powerful message. A show of solidarity with the Cuban people and with everyone who believes that freedom should never be a privilege."
