An 18-year-old Cuban youth is among the four suspects detained for the murder of Marvin Oporta García, a legal refugee of the same age who died after being shot multiple times in a park in Jacksonville, Florida.
The crime occurred on July 16 in Jacksonville Drew Park, near Barnes Road. Officers who responded to the scene found Oporta García with multiple gunshot wounds, and the young man died before he could receive medical attention, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO).
After several weeks of investigation, the Homicide Unit identified four suspects: Daniel Ramírez Mato, an 18-year-old Cuban; José Hernández Bermúdez, a 16-year-old Nicaraguan; Kleber Martínez, a 17-year-old Honduran; and Russell Oliva Reyes, a 21-year-old Honduran.
According to the authorities, none of the four had legal immigration status in the United States at the time of their arrest, while the victim was legally in the country as a refugee.
Ramírez Mato, Hernández Bermúdez, and Martínez were detained on August 15, while Oliva Reyes was arrested the following day. The four were held at the Duval County jail.
The case also took on a migratory dimension. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued immigration hold orders against the Cuban Ramírez Mato and Oliva Reyes.
Through these orders, ICE requests local authorities to notify them of any potential releases and to temporarily hold individuals in custody so that the agency can take over the immigration case.
In Jacksonville, other violent cases involving Cuban citizens have also been previously reported. In March 2025, Carlos Yordanis Aldana killed his partner in an apartment complex in that city and later was sentenced to 50 years in prison.
This August, another Cuban was arrested in Florida accused of attacking a fellow countryman with a machete.
The Sheriff's Office stated that the investigation into the death of Oporta García remains open.
"We will continue working to ensure justice for Oporta García, and our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time," the agency stated.
