Dressed in red from head to toe, with extensions that caught everyone's attention and even a surprise mariachi band, a Cuban woman made a striking reunion with her family in Cuba. The main figure is Faviana (@favi__y__yan), who shared the moment on TikTok and ended up garnering thousands of views and hundreds of comments. And, as often happens on social media, the comment section quickly turned into another spectacle.
The video lasts about four minutes and has everything: tears, hugs, live mariachi music, and embraces after years of separation. However, many users focused on another detail: their appearance.
The blonde hair with extensions and her completely red outfit garnered a lot of commentary. "Congratulations, we'll talk about the hair later," wrote one user in a message. Another was more straightforward: "I think there could have been a bit more red." And one of the most celebrated compared her arrival to a telenovela scene: "La reina del sur arriving in Jatibonico."
Faviana responded to many of the comments with humor and without losing her composure. In addition to clarifying that the reunion had not taken place in Jatibonico, she explained that wearing red had a special meaning for her and was related to a religious promise. "I am a child of Shangó every day of this world," she replied. In the Regla de Osha, red is one of the colors associated with Shangó.
But behind the comments about her extensions and her clothing lies a much more personal story. Faviana has been away from Cuba for years and recounted going through particularly difficult times away from her loved ones. She explained that she gave birth by cesarean section while alone after her husband had an accident on the island, and she spent a year unable to see her mother before returning with her baby.
That's why, when she was finally able to return, she wanted to surprise her mom with a mariachi band and experience the reunion in her own way. "I spent a year alone after giving birth and wanted to surprise my mom with a mariachi band," she explained in response to the criticism, regretting that some ended up focusing more on her extensions than on the significance of the moment.
There were those who came to her defense. "Everyone is criticizing, and I'm just envying that hug I've longed for over three years," wrote a user who mentioned she had just given birth and was alone in another country. Another user directly questioned the criticisms: "I don't understand all the criticism in this video, about her hair, about the red dress; I'm sure many of those who criticize can't even visit their families in Cuba."
Faviana's reunion adds to a long list of viral returns led by Cubans from the diaspora who share on TikTok the moment of embracing their loved ones after years of separation.
In this case, however, the emotional return ended up sharing the spotlight with the unexpected debate about Faviana's look. One user perfectly summarized it: "I didn't even see the mom, went straight to the comments."
