These are the Artificial Intelligence projects that Díaz-Canel visited in Matanzas

Miguel Díaz-Canel visited the Scientific and Technological Park of Matanzas (CienTEX) this Thursday, where he received a detailed explanation of the artificial intelligence projects being developed by the center, according to the state-run Periódico Girón.

The visit comes amid a severe energy crisis that leaves Matanzas with power outages lasting more than 24 consecutive hours, but the regime took advantage of the tour to showcase a supposed advancement in technology innovation centers.

The projects presented to the ruler have colorful names that combine technological jargon with local references:

• "The sports intelligence suite": an automated system based on AI for decision-making in Cuban sports. Developed in collaboration with the Cuban Sports Research Center, it operates in 12 disciplines and includes three subsystems: athlete performance evaluation, opponent analysis, and monitoring during training. It received the Technology Innovation Award at AFIDE 2023.
• "Varadero Smart Tourist Destination": an integrated ecosystem for managing the tourist hub. It includes the "Pulso" platform, which monitors social media with AI to measure visitor satisfaction. It also features a citizen monitoring app that allows residents to report issues related to solid waste collection and public lighting from their cell phones.
• "Artificial Intelligence-Assisted Diagnosis System for Thyroid Nodules": developed in collaboration between the Mario Muñoz Monroy Military Hospital and the University of Computer Sciences.

CienTEX was established in November 2020 and is involved in over 20 projects in information and communication technologies, affiliated with the University of Matanzas.

The visit to the technology park took place on the same day that Díaz-Canel presided over the National Opening Ceremony of the 2026-2027 Academic Year for Higher Education at the University of Matanzas itself, where Minister Walter Baluja García reported that more than 40,000 new students are joining the university system across the country.

During that event, the regime presented the 50th Anniversary Seal of the Ministry of Higher Education to three institutions in Matanzas: the Indio Hatuey Experimental Station of Grass and Forage, the Matanzas University of Medical Sciences, and the Antonio Guiteras thermal power plant.

In July of last year, Díaz-Canel visited the Scientific and Technological Park of Havana for the third time. In May, he called for the acceleration of the creation of a Cuban artificial intelligence.
