A landslide poses a serious danger at kilometer 30.4 of the Bayamo-Manzanillo highway, in the section known as Macuto, according to an alert issued by the Provincial Road Safety Commission of Granma and disseminated this Saturday by CNC TV Granma.
The collapse caused erosion on the slope of the road that runs along the Río Buey, with particularly critical impacts for those traveling in the Manzanillo-Bayamo direction.
Traffic authorities are urging drivers traveling through that stretch to refrain from using the lane adjacent to the affected area due to the high risk it poses to the safety of vehicles and their occupants.
The official notice also urges everyone to exercise extreme caution and to adhere to the traffic signals posted in the area: "All drivers traveling on this road are alerted to exercise caution, respect traffic signals, and avoid driving in the lane next to the affected area due to the high risk it poses."
The source does not specify whether the road was completely closed, nor does it report any casualties related to the incident. The exact date when the landslide occurred is also not indicated.
This episode adds to a pattern of sustained deterioration of the road infrastructure in Granma, worsened by the impact of Hurricane Melissa at the end of 2025, which left several impassable roads in the east of the island.
A month after the cyclone passed, transportation in the region continued to be not fully recovered, with multiple segments restricted to specialized vehicles, including the Bayamo-Cauto Embarcadero and Manzanillo-Niquero segments.
In May of this year, a similar incident led to the complete closure of the bridge over the Salado River on the Bayamo-Las Tunas road, following the detection of an undermining of the approach embankment also related to the damages from Hurricane Melissa.
The stretch of Macuto is particularly vulnerable due to its proximity to the Río Buey, whose floods and soil erosion can relatively easily compromise the stability of the embankment.
The Bayamo-Manzanillo highway connects the two most important cities in the province and serves as a crucial artery for the transportation of people and goods in Granma, making any disruption in that corridor a provincial issue.
In April of this year, the transportation infrastructure in Bayamo had already faced another setback when trash and debris blocked the railway line in the city, forcing the Havana-Bayamo route to operate in emergency mode.
