A motorcyclist was left in critical condition on Wednesday night in the municipality of Florida, Camagüey province, after colliding at high speed with the side of a Yutong bus that was traveling along the Central Highway, according to a report published in the Facebook group "Accidentes Buses & Camiones".
The accident occurred at the intersection of Egusquiza Street and the Central Highway, where —allegedly— the motorist did not stop at the 'Stop' sign before merging onto the national road.
Eyewitnesses, including the user Yasmany Morales, who published the report, indicated that the driver may have lost control of the motorcycle just meters before reaching the corner, encountering a pothole or uneven pavement at an excessive speed.
"Those of us who witnessed the crash observed that the motorcyclist may have lost control of the motorcycle just a few meters from the main road, after hitting a slope or pothole at an excessive speed, which likely prevented him from stopping in time at the mentioned corner of Egusquiza Street," reported the witness.
After the collision, neighbors and passersby at the scene organized themselves to take the injured person to the nearest hospital.
The motorist sustained a severe head injury, and his condition was described as critical at the time of transfer. His identity and subsequent clinical progress have not been disclosed.
The incident adds to a series of accidents involving motorcycles and Yutong buses in the province.
In January 2025, two Yutong buses collided on the Western Bypass of Camagüey, a route that connects to Florida, resulting in at least two fatalities and more than 50 injuries.
In April of that same year, a Yutong collided with a motorcycle at the Cruce de Lajas, also along the Central Highway, resulting in two fatalities.
Traffic accidents in Cuba reached alarming levels in 2025. According to data from the National Road Safety Commission released in January 2026, that year recorded 7,538 accidents, 750 fatalities, and 6,718 injuries across the country, surpassing the 634 deaths recorded in 2024.
Motorcycles and mopeds accounted for 63% of the accidents in 2025, and were responsible for 32% of the fatalities and 42% of the injuries, according to the same official data.
Authorities attribute most accidents to human factors—speeding, failure to yield right of way, and driving under the influence of alcohol—although the deterioration of roadways, with widespread potholes and uneven surfaces, systematically exacerbates the situation, as illustrated by the testimony of the accident in Florida itself.
