Two Cuban citizens, aged 40 and 23, died early Monday morning after the motorcycle they were riding was struck by a car on Route 1, near the access points to Montevideo, Uruguay.
The incident occurred around 5:54 a.m. at kilometer 15, when the motorcycle was attempting to merge onto the road from a side street and was involved in a front-side collision with a car traveling from east to west, according to local media Subrayado, citing the National Highway Police Directorate of Uruguay.
The 40-year-old Cuban was riding the motorcycle, and the 23-year-old was traveling as a passenger. Both died at the scene due to the severity of their injuries.
The car was driven by a 25-year-old man, who was unharmed and registered a score of zero on the breathalyzer test, according to the police report.
The exact circumstances of the accident are still under investigation. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of the two victims.
As a result of the accident, the exit from Montevideo on Route 1 was completely blocked, and traffic had to be rerouted through a local road, according to a report by El Observador.
The accident adds to other traffic incidents that have claimed the lives of Cuban migrants in Uruguay over the past year.
In October 2025, Abel Luis Vázquez Licea, 25 years old, died in an accident on Route 7 in Canelones, in which eight other Cubans were injured.
Two months later, another Cuban, 30 years old, died after crashing his motorcycle into a trailer on Route 65, near San Bautista.
In April 2026, a 58-year-old Cuban lost his life in Montevideo following a collision between two motorcycles in Paso de la Arena. His 22-year-old son sustained minor injuries.
