The mobile services were interrupted this Tuesday in Isla de la Juventud due to damage to the two main roads that connect the special municipality to the national telecommunications network.
The Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA) reported this Tuesday on its social media that the outage also partially affects landline services.
"Due to damage to the two main connection routes of the special municipality Isla de la Juventud with the national telecommunications network, mobile services in that area are currently interrupted," the company stated.
Regarding landline services, ETECSA specified that only local calls can be made while the disruption continues.
Specialists from the company are working alongside staff from Geocuba on efforts to restore both communication routes.
ETECSA explained that the work is being carried out "under complex conditions" because it involves marine links, but did not specify the source of the damage nor provide an estimated date for fully restoring services.
The company assured that other alternative routes were established to maintain communication with local authorities during the interruption.
The new outage from ETECSA, this time in Isla de la Juventud, adds to other issues recently reported in various provinces, contributing to a series of problems that at times makes it seem like the telecommunications monopoly is competing with the Electric Union in the number of incidents.
On September 2, technical issues affected the sending and receiving of SMS messages and temporarily took Transfermóvil offline, a platform whose operation relies on text message notifications.
Earlier, on August 17, a fiber optic cable cut affected the system responsible for managing Nauta service payments, causing issues with recharging, transferring balance between accounts, and payments for Nauta Hogar.
On August 3, another breakdown caused disruptions to cellular services nationwide after the generator supporting one of the main mobile network centers broke down.
On that occasion, the affected numbers began with 52, 509, 598, and 599.
