The mobile services were interrupted this Tuesday in Isla de la Juventud due to damage to the two main roads that connect the special municipality with the national telecommunications network.
The Telecommunications Company of Cuba (ETECSA) announced this Tuesday on its social media that the outage also partially affects landline services.
"Due to damage to the two main connection routes of the special municipality Isla de la Juventud with the national telecommunications network, mobile services in that area are currently interrupted," the company stated.
Regarding landline services, ETECSA specified that only local calls can be made while the disruption continues.
Specialists from the company are working alongside Geocuba staff to restore both communication routes.
ETECSA explained that the work is being carried out "under complex conditions" because it involves marine links, but did not specify the source of the damage nor provided an estimated date for the full restoration of services.
The company assured that other alternative routes were established to maintain communication with local authorities during the interruption.
The new outage at ETECSA, this time in Isla de la Juventud, adds to other faults reported recently in various provinces, in a chain of problems that at times makes it seem like the telecommunications monopoly is competing with the Electric Union in the number of incidents.
On September 2nd, technical issues affected the sending and receiving of SMS messages and temporarily rendered Transfermóvil, a platform that relies on text message notifications, out of service.
On August 17, an optical fiber cut affected the system responsible for managing Nauta service payments, causing issues with reloads, balance transfers between accounts, and Nauta Hogar payments.
On August 3, another malfunction had caused disruptions to cellular service nationwide after the generator that supported one of the main centers of the mobile network broke down.
On that occasion, numbers starting with 52, 509, 598, and 599 were affected.
