The classrooms designated for training nursing students at the 13 de Marzo center in Cárdenas, Matanzas, experienced a new episode of vandalism during the early hours of this Monday, according to the local telecenter Telebandera.
The report indicated that the events occurred in the early hours of September 14 and confirmed that this is not the first recorded incident at those facilities.
“Antisocial elements strike again against the institution,” the media outlet stated, affirming that since August, several similar actions have taken place: first, they throw stones at the building and then they enter the premises to cause damage.
According to that version, the new attack occurred this time while classes were already in session, which means the damage directly impacts the educational process of students preparing to become future health professionals.
«This new attack on the educational institution necessitates increased vigilance as it is a sign of the impunity with which those who commit these atrocities act,» stated Telebandera, which urged not to regard these episodes as mere "malicious acts of adolescents and young people."
However, the version circulated by the state media was questioned in the comments on the publication itself.
The activist Christian Arbolaez claimed to have spoken with local residents and raised questions about the circumstances of the incident.
“Why did no neighbor feel or hear any stone? I have already spoken with several of those who live nearby,” Arbolaez asked.
The activist also questioned that, according to the images, it apparently didn't seem that any valuable equipment was taken: "How strange this story is: they didn't take the television or the refrigerator, and what can be seen is a mess of papers inside a classroom. I will keep investigating."
Arbolaez also took the opportunity to criticize Telebandera for what he considers an uneven coverage of security issues in Cárdenas, asking why the outlet does not report with the same urgency about "the burglaries in homes, the assaults, the murders, or the deaths that occur in polyclinics and healthcare centers."
Although the vandalism at this location has become recurrent, it does not represent isolated incidents. This situation occurs in a province where, in recent months, numerous attacks against public facilities and property have been reported.
Just days ago, it was reported that Matanzas has accumulated 91 damaged transformers and over 55,000 liters of stolen dielectric oil.
The province accounts for about 60% of the thefts of that product recorded in Cuba, with more than 70 cases documented, according to data from the Provincial Electric Company.
Moreover, Cárdenas has been particularly affected. On August 15, unknown individuals stole dielectric oil from a transformer located on Calvo Avenue between Tenería and Salud, marking the second similar incident affecting the same electrical circuit in just eight days.
The previous one had left more than 3,900 customers without service.
Also in August, a section of the metal railings of one of the historic bridges in the city of Matanzas was removed, another incident publicly reported as vandalism against the heritage of the province.
And just a few days earlier, in Cárdenas itself, a new ambulance was stoned while transporting a patient to the hospital. The attack, which occurred while the vehicle was passing in front of La Verbena, resulted in the breaking of several windows.
