A Cuban mother ran out from her house to the porch the moment she saw her emigrated son appear, and they embraced in the street amidst cries and tears that broke the hearts of those who witnessed it. The scene was captured in a video posted on TikTok by the user @idrey.leivas.mart last Tuesday and has garnered over 80,200 views in just a few days.
The clip presents the same reunion story from a different angle than what has circulated before: while the first video captured the perspective of the young man arriving in tears inside the car, this new footage captures the exact moment when the mother sees him and loses all composure.
"Oh, my child! Oh, I love you so much! Oh, I care about you a lot, my child!" the woman cries, unable to hold back her tears, as the other gathered family members also break into tears. At another moment in the video, she is heard asking her son to breathe: "It's here, it's here. Breathe, it's here."
What makes the scene particularly heart-wrenching is that the young man had already been crying inside the vehicle before stepping out, even before seeing his family, as if the years of separation had become unbearable in the last few meters of the journey. The creator of the previous video captured that moment with a single phrase: "And the sky cried too."
A ballad accompanies the images with lyrics that seem written for that moment: "With the strength of my heart / And the courage of a love without end / I will one day gather my courage / And I will reclaim what I lost."
This reunion adds to a long chain of similar scenes that continue to circulate on social media, a direct reflection of the exodus that has fragmented thousands of Cuban families. A Cuban returned to the island after four years and five months of separation at the beginning of September, in an equally emotional scene that also moved thousands. Weeks earlier, another Cuban saw his mother again after ten years apart, in a reunion described as impossible to witness without becoming emotional.
Last Sunday, a young woman who left Cuba when her daughter was five years old staged another reunion that went viral on social media, and on the same day another emigrant arrived as a surprise after seven years and received applause from those who saw him.
