A young woman fulfilled one of the most heartfelt promises that can be made between friends: to walk through the rain along a flooded path to embrace parents who have been waiting for nearly five years for their daughter. The video published on TikTok by the account @yiselvelazquezr became an intimate portrait of the pain carried by the Cuban diaspora.
"When my friend found out that I was going to Cuba, the only thing she asked me was to go to her house to give her parents a hug. How could I not fulfill her request when she hasn't been able to see them for nearly five years?" the protagonist explained in the recording.
The images show the young woman making her way through the water that has accumulated on the path, not stopping until she reaches the door of that family to fulfill her promise.
The gesture goes beyond a simple favor among friends. It encapsulates in a single embrace the weight of years of separation, the journeys that cannot be afforded, the immigration restrictions, and the economic hardships that prevent thousands of Cubans from returning to the island, even if they wish to.
This type of scene has become a sustained trend on social media in recent years. In June, a young woman arrived in Cuba under the rain to embrace her grandparents after three years of separation.
In August, another video showcased the reunion of a Cuban with his father after five years. Last week, a mother fainted upon seeing her daughter unexpectedly return.
The video by @yiselvelazquezr adds a different dimension to that narrative: it’s not about one’s own reunion, but that of another person. It reflects the solidarity of someone who can travel to someone who cannot.
The song accompanying the images expresses it clearly: "I return to the cradle that saw me born, I return to this neighborhood that watched me run / What I was, what I am, and what I will be for my beautiful island."
