Three young people aged between 21 and 25 are said to have been detained for their alleged connection to the incident that occurred on August 24 in the parking lot of the Ernesto Guevara General Teaching Hospital in Las Tunas, where one worker died and another was injured during a robbery.
The official Periódico 26 reported that the three young individuals are said to be detained and placed at the disposal of the competent authorities, citing "unofficial sources."
The medium referred to them as the "suspected authors" of the events and noted that they would be between 21 and 25 years old. The publication did not disclose their identities nor specified what charges would have been formally brought against them.
The official profile Claridad Tunera also reported on the detention and stated that it involved three individuals aged 21, 22, and 25 who were handed over to the authorities.
According to that version, the incident occurred in the early hours of August 24 in the bicycle parking area of the Dr. Ernesto Guevara Provincial Hospital.
There was the custodian of the cycles area, who died, and another worker from the gases area, who was injured and, according to the report, was not in life-threatening danger.
During the incident, a motorbike, a bicycle, and a mobile phone were stolen.
Claridad Tunera added that both workers were together and that, "apparently," unknown individuals had placed some type of sedative in the coffee they consumed.
The initial reports released after the incident indicated that the circumstances surrounding the custodian's death remained without an official explanation.
At that time, Periódico 26 reported that no signs of physical violence had been detected in the victims.
There was also speculation that some sedative substance might have been placed in the workers' coffee, although this possibility had not been confirmed by the authorities and was pending toxicological and forensic results.
The new reports also do not specify the cause of death of the guard nor provide results from those examinations.
The deep economic crisis that Cuba is experiencing is also reflected in a greater perception of insecurity and repeated reports of theft, including incidents that have occurred in parking lots and healthcare facilities.
In Camagüey, during August, residents expressed concern over the increase in thefts of motorcycles and electric bicycles in parking areas, items that command high prices in the informal market: over 1,700 dollars for some bicycles and more than 2,000 dollars for certain motorcycles.
That same month, there were also reports of repeated thefts within hospitals in Santiago de Cuba, where more than 11 phones, as well as sheets and fans, were reported stolen in less than two weeks.
In November 2025, two individuals were arrested for their alleged involvement in the theft of a vehicle in the parking lot of the pediatric hospital in Matanzas, another incident that drew attention to security in the parking areas of healthcare institutions.
