A 38-year-old Cuban was arrested in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, accused of having coordinated an armed attack that left one dead and two injured in Cancun.
The capture was confirmed by the attorney general of Quintana Roo, Raciel López Salazar, according to a report from Noticaribe.
The detainee, officially identified as Y.A. "N", was wanted for the events that occurred on September 4 in the Villas Otoch Paraíso neighborhood in Cancun.
According to the investigation, the Cuban allegedly summoned Daisy Cecilia "N" and José Guadalupe "N" with the supposed purpose of handing them the keys to a property he had for rent.
Both arrived accompanied by a man identified as Pastor "N."
Once at the location, the three were surprised by an individual armed with a 9mm pistol, who opened fire on them, according to the authorities' reconstruction.
A pastor died at the scene, while Daisy Cecilia and José Guadalupe were injured in the chest.
The two survivors managed to leave the site in a vehicle in search of medical attention and were later assisted by police and paramedics on Kabah Avenue. Both were taken to the General Hospital of Cancún.
Residents in the area reported hearing between eight and ten gunshots, which triggered the activation of the so-called "red code" safety alert.
The main hypothesis of the Prosecutor's Office suggests that the attack was carried out under the instructions of the Cuban who is now in custody, who left the scene and was later located in Playa del Carmen.
Investigative Police agents executed the arrest warrant against him there.
According to the local media De Peso, a control judge has linked him to a proceeding for qualified homicide and attempted homicide.
Local media have also reported a version suggesting that the conflict may be related to a property that the accused allegedly occupied for about a year without paying rent. The Prosecutor's Office has not publicly confirmed this information.
The arrest comes after other recent cases in Cancún in which Cuban citizens have been investigated for violent crimes. In May, four Cubans were arrested following a shooting attack against a singer in Supermanzana 23.
At the beginning of September, another Cuban was linked to a case for allegedly attacking a hotel receptionist with a bladed weapon.
These incidents have coincided with reports of discrimination against the Cuban community living in Quintana Roo. The organization CISVAC has documented cases of refusals to rent housing to Cubans, insults, and advertisements with messages like "Cubans not accepted."
The authorities in Quintana Roo have previously requested to prevent criminal acts attributed to individuals from being used to stigmatize the entire migrant community.
So far, the accused's version or that of his defense regarding the events attributed to him by the prosecution has not been publicly disclosed.
