A nurse from the maternal-infant block of the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima University General Hospital in Cienfuegos reported on social media that her belongings were stolen while she was on a 24-hour shift.
Daniela Llorente Díaz made the report in the group Facebook Las cosas de Fernanda and asked anyone who could find her personal belongings to at least return her identification documents.
"Please, I ask those who find it to return it to me; I only need the documents (...) It should be shameful to steal from someone who dedicates their entire day to caring for the health of others. I only ask that whoever has my belongings returns them," the young woman expressed.
His post generated over 2,900 reactions and a flood of comments expressing citizen outrage highlighting an alleged increase in crime in Cuba.
Several users who commented on the post noted that the area where the theft occurred is restricted access for hospital staff, suggesting that the culprit may have been someone from the workplace itself. "In the end, they steal from each other because no outsiders enter that area of the health center," wrote one of the commentators.
The outrage was widespread. "What an abuse to steal from a nurse who is having a rough night in a hospital saving lives. You can't even let go of your bag anymore," expressed another user. A third pointed out, "It’s a lack of respect for someone who is giving their all in caring for a patient."
Many pointed out that the problem is neither new nor isolated. "The thefts in the hospital are now very frequent. There are many criminals working there," warned one individual. Another questioned the lack of oversight: "The thefts in the hospital have become a habit, a routine. What are the security guards doing?"
In mid-August, at the same health center, resident physician Liset López, from Gynecology and Obstetrics, reported the theft of her backpack containing a laptop, her thesis, personal documents, money, identification card, bank cards, medical seal, and keys, while she was working on the fourth floor of the hospital.
The thefts are not limited to Cienfuegos. In August, more than 11 stolen phones were reported at the Galician Center in Santiago de Cuba in less than two weeks, along with sheets and fans.
That same month, a guard died during a robbery in the parking lot of the "Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna" Hospital in Las Tunas, under circumstances that were not clarified. According to official sources, the thieves stole a motorbike, a bicycle, and the cell phone of one of the two workers in the parking area.
