An water salute is performed at the Guantanamo Naval Base: this is the reason

A striking ceremony recently marked the final flight of Lieutenant Cameron «Buzz» Young at the Naval Base of Guantánamo, where he was welcomed on the runway with a traditional water salute to bid him farewell at the end of his service period at the facility.

The official page of the Guantanamo Naval Base reported this Wednesday on the ceremony and shared images of the moment Young returned to the flight line.

«Lieutenant Cameron 'Buzz' Young recently completed his final flight at the Guantanamo Naval Base and returned to the flight line to receive a water salute that marked the end of his time here», the post stated.

The water salute consists of creating large arches with jets of water over an aircraft or around it during its arrival or movement on the runway.

The foundation itself explained that this is a tradition with a long history in both the maritime and aviation fields, symbolizing admiration and respect.

The ceremony did not signify Young's retirement from the Armed Forces. The publication stated that the lieutenant is now heading to his next command or posting.

Good winds and favorable seas!, the establishment wrote at the beginning of its message, a traditional expression from the Navy used to wish good luck to those setting off to a new destination.

"We wish you luck as you head to your next command," the post concluded.

The Guantanamo Naval Base plays a significant role in U.S. operations in the Caribbean.

At the end of May, the U.S. Southern Command described it as a "vital operational and logistical center" for its activities in the hemisphere.

In addition, in June, the United States Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, visited the facility and met with the troops deployed there.

During that visit, he described Guantánamo as a "very important and strategic" point for the United States.

Most recently, at the beginning of September, two littoral combat ships of the U.S. Navy arrived at the Guantanamo Naval Base: the USS Billings and the USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul, as part of their respective deployments in the Caribbean.
