A striking ceremony recently marked the final flight of Lieutenant Cameron «Buzz» Young at the Guantánamo Naval Base, where he was welcomed on the runway with a traditional water salute to bid him farewell at the end of his service at the facility.
The official page of the Guantanamo Naval Base reported this Wednesday on the ceremony and shared images of the moment Young returned to the flight line.
«Lieutenant Cameron 'Buzz' Young recently completed his final flight at the Guantanamo Naval Base and returned to the flight line to receive a water salute marking the end of his time here», the publication reported.
The water salute involves spraying large arcs of water around an aircraft during its arrival or taxiing on the runway.
The base itself explained that it is a tradition with a long history in both the maritime and aviation fields, symbolizing admiration and respect.
The ceremony did not signify Young's withdrawal from the Armed Forces. The publication indicated that the lieutenant is now heading to his next command or posting.
Good winds and favorable seas!, the establishment wrote at the beginning of its message, a traditional expression from the Navy used to wish good luck to those departing for a new destination.
"We wish you luck as you move on to your next command," the post concluded.
The Guantanamo Naval Base plays a significant role in U.S. operations in the Caribbean.
At the end of May, the U.S. Southern Command described it as a "vital operational and logistical center" for its activities in the hemisphere.
In June, the United States Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, visited the installation and met with the troops stationed there.
During that visit, he described Guantánamo as a "very important and strategic" point for the United States.
More recently, at the beginning of September, two littoral combat ships from the U.S. Navy arrived at the Guantanamo Naval Base: the USS Billings and the USS Minneapolis-Saint Paul, as part of their respective deployments in the Caribbean.
