A dentist was shot and killed on Saturday afternoon in the back parking lot of Plaza Galerías, in Supermanzana 2 in downtown Cancun.
The dentist was initially identified by several local media as the Cuban Tomás Medina, owner of the office DentalMed, but subsequent reports confirmed that it was actually the Mexican Jesús Apache Medina, a former American football player from UNAM, who was murdered in Cancun.
According to local media reports, the victim had just finished his work shift and was heading to his car—a white Seat Ibiza—when two men on a motorcycle approached, and one of them shot him directly in the head.
The body was found lying next to the vehicle in the parking area. The assailants fled immediately without being intercepted.
Workers and visitors at the plaza reported the incident to 911, prompting the mobilization of elements from the Cancun Municipal Police, who cordoned off the area.
Paramedics from a private company arrived at the scene, but confirmed that Medina no longer had vital signs.
Subsequently, agents from the Attorney General's Office of Quintana Roo, specifically from the Homicides unit, opened an investigation file and collected evidence at the crime scene. Family members of the victim also arrived and were interviewed by ministerial personnel.
The body was transferred to the Medical Examiner's Office for the mandated autopsy.
The initial coverage of the case generated confusion: several local media outlets published versions with different names for the victim, including "Thomas M." and "Jesús Medina Mendoza." Expediente Quintana Roo, a media outlet specializing in events in the region, reported that it was Tomás Medina, a Cuban national.
Other local media also published the same incorrect information.
As of this Monday, authorities had not reported any arrests in connection with the homicide. The State Attorney General's Office is continuing its investigations to determine the motive and identify those responsible.
