The Cuban actress Rosa Vasconcelos confessed that she was on the brink of death for six months after undergoing stomach reduction surgery in Cuba, during an interview on Sandy Castrillo's YouTube channel, part of the program "Stories of My People."
"Very few people know that I underwent a procedure in Cuba for stomach reduction. I think I was like the fifth case, and I was very ill, hovering between life and death for six months," confessed the actress, known for her leading role in the film El premio flaco, by Juan Carlos Cremata.
According to his account, the operation went smoothly, but upon returning home, he experienced a complication: "When I left the hospital everything went well, but I started to vomit, and when I did, one of the staples in my stomach came out, and a few days later I developed peritonitis," he explained.
The complication led her to the hospital with urgency, where her condition critically worsened: "I was between life and death for six months, and I was not expected to survive."
"I developed peritonitis, my organs were failing, I had generalized sepsis, I had fluid in my lung, I experienced external bleeding, and my hemoglobin dropped to 6. The doctors didn't expect me to make it; they reported my condition as critical every day, but they saved my life," she recounted starkly.
As part of the treatment, the medical team had to place a prosthesis. Vasconcelos expressed special thanks to all the doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff who saved his life: "Even the cleaner knew me there."
After overcoming the crisis, Vasconcelos lost 100 pounds: going from 280 to 180. However, over time, he regained some of the weight. "This surgery means that if you don’t take care of yourself, you will gain weight again," he admitted. This prompted him to join a gym in Miami recently, where he has been training for three months and has lost an additional 20 pounds.
The actress, who resides in Miami, is currently collaborating with Cuban actor and comedian Yubrán Luna, producing comedy content for social media.
Regarding the Cuba she left behind, she was direct: "I have very good memories of Cuba, which is not the Cuba of today, which is devastated, and it breaks my heart to see my Cuba in such conditions."
