The US dollar continues to be breaking records in the Cuban informal market and this Wednesday it makes yet another jump, reaching 722 Cuban pesos (CUP), extending a surge that in just one week has taken it from under 700 pesos to a new high.
At 10:00 a.m., local Cuban time, places the dollar at 722 CUP, with a buying reference of 720 CUP and a selling reference of 724 CUP.
The behavior of the last few days indicates the speed of the increase. A week ago, the dollar was at 698 CUP, still on the verge of the 700 barrier.
One day later, it reached 700 CUP for the first time and, rather than correcting after hitting that figure, it started Friday at 703 CUP.
Exchange Rate Evolution
The trend continued last Saturday when it rose to 708 CUP and set a new high. By Sunday, it was at 713 CUP, and on Monday it reached 715 CUP.
This Tuesday, the US dollar rose again to 718 CUP, before reaching the current 722 CUP.
In just one week, the index shows a gain of 24.5 pesos, equivalent to 3.5%. The increase extends to 56.5 pesos over the last 30 days, or 8.5%, although this monthly comparison should be interpreted with caution as it may partially reflect adjustments in the methodology of the index.
The dollar is currently at its 30-day high of 722 CUP, while the low for the period was 665 CUP.
The euro (EUR) is not lagging behind either. This Wednesday, it is at 825 CUP, with a buying reference of 820 CUP and a selling reference of 829 CUP.
The European currency rises compared to the 821 CUP from the previous day and accumulates a gain of 29.5 pesos in a week (+3.7 %).
In the last 30 days, it has increased 69.5 pesos (+9.2%), although this comparison may also be affected by methodological adjustments.
The euro also reaches this Wednesday its highest point in the last 30 days, while the minimum for the period was 753 CUP. Additionally, it remains the most expensive currency in the Cuban informal market, with a difference of 103 pesos compared to the dollar.
In the opposite direction moves the MLC (Freely Convertible Currency), which appears this Wednesday around 475 CUP, with a purchase at 460 CUP and a sale at 490 CUP.
The index shows a decrease of 26.5 pesos (-5.3%) compared to the previous day and a decline of 63.5 pesos (-11.8%) over the past week.
Over the past 30 days, the MLC has fluctuated between a maximum of 542 CUP and a minimum of 415 CUP. Since it does not have a physical existence, its circulation is primarily limited to transactions and businesses that use this payment method.
