Three young girls, aged 15, 16, and 17, were struck by a vehicle this Tuesday while crossing at a marked crosswalk in Miramar, Florida. They were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries but are in stable condition, according to a report from local police to Telemundo 51.
The incident occurred in the morning at the intersection of Miramar Parkway and South Douglas Road, when the teenagers —students from Miramar High School heading to class— were struck by a Dodge Challenger traveling northbound.
The three teenagers sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital, where they were in stable condition, according to the police. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene, called the police, and cooperated with the investigators from the very beginning.
The investigation focuses on determining who had the right of way, as the accounts of the driver and the victims are contradictory.
" They were crossing east on Douglas Rd and a vehicle was heading north. When they reached the intersection, somehow they collided. The driver says he had a green light. The young women say they had the signal to cross," explained Delrish Moss, Chief of Police of Miramar.
Authorities will review the surveillance cameras in the area and analyze the traffic signals to clarify the events.
"We need to review the cameras in the area, check the signals. We also took measurements to determine if speed was a factor. It doesn't seem to be the case, but we have to verify everything," Moss added.
As the investigation progressed, the eastbound lanes of Miramar Parkway and the southbound lanes of South Douglas Road remained closed to traffic.
The area is no stranger to this type of incident. The intersection where the accident occurred was categorized as the second most accident-prone in the city during the period of 1996-1999, with 36 recorded collisions, accounting for 17% of the total municipal report from the Miramar Police.
Students who walk daily through the area reported that the danger of walking to school feels familiar to them. Mateo Cruz, one of the students, recounted that he himself was almost hit by a car in the same zone: "An old woman, I don't know what she was doing, didn't stop for the traffic light and almost ran me over."
The south of Florida has recorded several accidents involving minors in Broward County during 2026. In July, a mother accidentally ran over her 19-month-old son while reversing her truck in West Park, and the baby died in the hospital.
In April, a driver was arrested for hitting an 11-year-old boy who was on his way to school in Miami Gardens.
As of the time of publication, no charges had been filed against the driver of the Dodge, and the investigation remained ongoing.
