Luis Ángel Rodríguez Guillén, a 37-year-old Cuban, was fatally stabbed on Saturday night at a shipyard in Guyana following a fight with another Cuban citizen who worked and lived at the same location, according to the Guyanese police.
According to the report from Demerara Waves, the incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on September 26 in Tierra de Canaán (Land of Canaan), on the eastern bank of the Demerara River.
Police information indicates that Rodríguez Guillén and a 32-year-old compatriot, both employees of the shipyard, had an argument that ended in a physical confrontation.
During the fight, the 32-year-old man allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed Rodríguez Guillén in the chest. The victim fell in the hallway of the housing area where the workers were staying.
Other employees intervened, subdued the suspect, and subsequently handed him over to the authorities. "He was arrested and remains in police custody," the police stated.
The investigators also recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack.
Rodríguez Guillén was transferred to the Diamond Regional Hospital, where a doctor confirmed his death. His body was subsequently taken to Memorial Gardens funeral home for an autopsy.
The case once again highlights violent incidents involving members of the Cuban community in Guyana. In August, three Cubans were placed in preventive detention accused of the homicide of another compatriot that occurred on July 22 in Diamond, East Bank Demerara.
Other Cubans have lost their lives violently in the country over the past two years. Among the victims are José Aurelio Ramírez, stabbed in April 2025; Pedro Alexander Frometa Slonchak, shot by a security guard in August 2025; Ariel Betancourt Ramírez, stabbed in an apparent robbery in December 2025; Dainier Vegas Infante, shot at his workplace in May 2026; and Wilber Fonseca Fonseca, found dead alongside a road in June 2026.
In August of last year, representatives of the Cuban community reported that they had become the “preferred target of crime” in Guyana, following several violent episodes against migrants from the island.
The 32-year-old Cuban remains in custody while the Guyanese police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Rodríguez Guillén's death.
